i have a 4month bulldog who is toilet trained to the point he barks to go out and lets you know but now and again he will wee in the house and in other houses that hes been to but dosnt know it like home. Some times he nos what hes doing because he will be weeing but runing away from me at the same time.does any body have an answer?

Hi Kirsty

It could well be the case that he hasn't as yet made the association fully that you are now expecting him to bark if he needs to go out - no offence, but it may just have been coincidence a few times and you have misread this as his signal that he needs to go ;)   At 16 weeks or so he probably doesn't have sufficient bladder control as yet to hold on for any length of time so if you have missed more subtle signals by him of needing out he simply cannot hold on long enough.  Additionally I've found that males in particular during cold weather need to wee a bit more often :)

>Some times he nos what hes doing because he will be weeing but runing away from me at the same time

It's unclear what you mean here   Is he running away as in (a) heading for the great outdoors or  (b)appearing to be scared of you?

If it's the first option it is probably because he is anxious not to soil indoors but simply can't hold on.  If it is the latter, then perhaps you have chastised him verbally or physically for going indoors and so now he may be worried by your response and even holding on too long as he is worried about going when you're around.

HTH, regards Teri

Edited to add:
ps: at his age I would still be supervising ALL toilet trips and using a command word followed by praise when he's emptied himself :)  While some pups pick up on things very quickly not all learn (or physically mature) at the same rate.  Equally the owner can be too close to the situation to appreciate that they are perhaps being less attentive to house training than is still necessary to be.

He dose get praised when he goes outside and i do have a saying which i use and he understands.i dont make him wait as i always put him out every hour or so he wees like if hes playing its like he forgets or then like when he is at  the inlaws he just does it with out a thought.

Hi again Kirsty

both situations as described suggest (to me) that he is not yet fully house trained coupled with still lacking in bladder control :)  When visiting other homes with pups it's not uncommon for them to have more accidents simply because the layout of where they head for to "ask out" is totally different.

If you persevere and try and be more observant of his body language so that you can quickly get him outdoors you should see an improvement.  The fact that he's often in the middle of play gives you an indicator immediately that he's likely to "need".

If you find that he's weeing more often than is normal for him then it may be worth having him examined by your vet in case he has a urinary infection.  Although personally I think it's a training issue which should be resolved in the next few weeks as he matures if you keep on top of the regular garden trips, observation and lots of praise for getting things right.

NB - also ensure that you clean any areas indoors that he has soiled thoroughly with a mild solution of bio-washing powder and a wipe over with white spirit to remove any smells / fatty desposits from the urine. (apologies if that's already part of your routine :) )

i do clean up if he does wee inside to be quite honest he dosnt have signs that he needs a wee he just does it.Its very blood boiling also he is forever weeing on the bathroom mats he could of just weed but he would still wee on the mats.I hope it is just that he isnt fully toilet trained i have noticed he started going more when it was really cold.

Perhaps his "signs" are being missed by you

I think if you are genuinely 100% confident that you take him out frequently enough, observe, command, praise/treat immediately etc then you should be asking your vet to investigate if he has a UTI problem ......

Dogs are anxious to please us and don't like to be dirty indoors when they "know the house rules" - so if you think none of my advice so far is relevant because you've covered all the bases in training etc, then the next port of call would appear to be a health check.

Dogs often like to wee on absorbent things because naturally it seems like a good place to go (somewhere where the wee will be soaked up rather than left to run about).

For this reason they often like carpets, mats, doormats etc and you might need to remove these from his area while you are toilet training.

You also say that you praise him when you take him out and he toilets - praise isn't enough - you need to also give him a treat when he toilets outside, because you need to make there be a big difference between what happens when he goes outside and when he goes inside.  If he learns that he gets a treat outside, he will try very hard to hold on, in order to get the treat.

You describe him running away from you - that sounds very submissive and it sounds also from things you say, like it being very "blood boiling" that you might have been punishing him for toileting indoors.  Please stop punishing him for toileting indoors, even if it is only verbal.  Any toileting indoors is YOUR fault for not supervising him closely enough, not his fault.  If you continue to punish him you will only teach him to toilet out of your sight.  When he grows up, you will then end up with a dog which runs behind bushes and trees to toilet - because he thinks that you don't want to see him.  He will associate you being present while toileting with punishment.  You are therefore training the wrong thing by punishing him for going indoors - it's not helping his toilet training at all.  Just ignore it and clean it up.  And then supervise him more closely.  If you can't supervise him all the time, consider getting a crate.

My puppy is almost 4 months(days away), He still does the same, mostly he is great, he has mastered the dog flap and is so pleased with himself hen he comes back in.....Then he wanders round next time and stops dead in tracks and wees right there usually on  the lounge carpet....That is it for the rest of the day I have to watch like a hawk, if the weather isn't so good rain or howling wind is mostly when it happens.
So I think its just normal and if we are a little more patient it will be alright:cool:
