Does anyone know what breed is on the cover of the book Dogs by Desmond Morris. It's driving me nuts. Looks a bit like a flat coat with a square, deep lower jaw and a beard. Very cute. Thanks
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.02.06 17:54 UTC
Image here. It looks like a spaniel of some sort to me.
- By liberty Date 28.02.06 18:00 UTC
Oh it does look like a wet flatcoat, libbys ears used to look like that, but the muzzle n beard don't look right:confused:

Edited to add libby dosn't have a beard of course:rolleyes:
- By Lori Date 28.02.06 18:02 UTC
Thanks Jeangenie - why didn't I think of that
- By dannii [gb] Date 28.02.06 18:07 UTC
Looks like a spinone to me?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.02.06 18:10 UTC Edited 28.02.06 18:12 UTC
No, definitely not a spinone - the coat's all wrong. I think what looks like a beard is the wet ear on the other side seen below the muzzle.
- By jalle [gb] Date 28.02.06 18:12 UTC
possibly a setter.
- By dannii [gb] Date 28.02.06 18:15 UTC
Very cute what ever it is! :)
- By liberty Date 28.02.06 18:16 UTC
Apart from the muzzle, I would say flatcoat, or perhaps its just the angle of the piccie, but I have piccies of libby wet, and they are very similar with her 'rasta' ears  :D :D
- By ChristineW Date 28.02.06 18:20 UTC
Definitely a working Cocker.
- By chrisjack Date 28.02.06 18:25 UTC
I 2nd a working cocker- ears and head definitely!
- By onetwothree [gb] Date 01.03.06 11:11 UTC
I agree - working cocker - quite a large one though.
- By Robert K Date 28.02.06 18:27 UTC
Field spaniel ;)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.02.06 18:31 UTC
Quite possibly - it's got very short legs. :)
- By liberty Date 28.02.06 18:38 UTC
*whispers......Robertk is just jealous cos hes not got a flattie........yet

:D :D
- By RRfriend [se] Date 28.02.06 18:41 UTC
Wachtelhound?  A German breed, reminds you of a spaniel.
Karen
- By ChristineW Date 28.02.06 18:46 UTC
Definitely a solid (Probably liver as black would be darker even in a b&w photo) working Cocker.
- By Robert K Date 28.02.06 18:48 UTC
Field spaniels come in solid colours as well as the springer wannabe colours, muzzles a bit heavy for a cocker
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.02.06 18:50 UTC
The muzzle looks a bit roany, but I agree it's liver as opposed to black. :)
- By Robert K Date 28.02.06 18:47 UTC
Flatties are wannabe springers, Wachtelhunds are springer lookalikes :D
- By liberty Date 28.02.06 18:48 UTC
Lol lol :D :D @RobertK
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.02.06 18:51 UTC
Is there a hidden agenda here? ;) :D
- By liberty Date 28.02.06 18:55 UTC
<Is there a hidden agenda here?   >

You lost me there JG:confused:
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.02.06 19:32 UTC
Don't worry, nothing sinister! :) There seemed to be a teensy hint of breedism! ;) :D :D
- By liberty Date 28.02.06 19:49 UTC
Breedism Pah what tosh........as if:cool: ;)

:D :D :D
- By ChristineW Date 28.02.06 20:25 UTC
Does it have enough stop to be a Field??????
- By Dawn-R Date 28.02.06 21:25 UTC
Looks a bit like a Gordon Setter to me. With being wet you can't make out whether it has tan points though, but that's my feeling, Gordon Setter.

Far too short in the leg for a Gordon, not unless dwarfism has crept into the breed?  ;)
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 28.02.06 22:05 UTC
Looks like a Gordon to me, to rangey for a field spaniel I would have thought.  Come on, someone put me out of my misery, what is it?
- By kayc [in] Date 28.02.06 22:13 UTC
I still thinks its a solid coloured Working ESS, with heavy roaning on the muzzle and flash
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.02.06 22:14 UTC
I'm with you, Kayc.
- By chalkley [gb] Date 28.02.06 19:09 UTC
I think it's a field spaniel too.
- By Boxacrazy [in] Date 28.02.06 19:23 UTC
I reckon that its a field spaniel too :)
- By Soli Date 28.02.06 18:55 UTC
It hasn't got a deep lower jaw or a beard - what looks like the underjaw and a beard is actually it's other ear.....

Debs
- By chrisjack Date 28.02.06 19:12 UTC
well spotted!!
- By Lori Date 28.02.06 19:29 UTC
A couple people have said that and I think you're right. Funny how I just got the idea of a beard stuck in my head.
- By LucyD [gb] Date 28.02.06 21:42 UTC
Some sort of spaniel, either Field or working Cocker?
- By kayc [in] Date 28.02.06 21:42 UTC
A solid coloured ESS
- By liberty Date 28.02.06 22:16 UTC
Naw.......its a flattie *hic*......;)
- By liberty Date 28.02.06 22:20 UTC
Typical JG won't share the Bombay :rolleyes:
- By briedog [gb] Date 28.02.06 22:22 UTC
gordon setter, but then you would see the tan marking on the muzzel  against the black.it not a flatcoat.
- By liberty Date 28.02.06 22:30 UTC
I thought Gordon Setters had markings other than on the muzzle:confused:
- By ChristineW Date 01.03.06 05:46 UTC
Not a Gordon, the tan markings would show on the legs & head even in a b&w photo.  A Gordon, even sitiing, would have a far longer leg than that dog shows.
Never seen a solid colour ESS, usually the working type ones are the whitest ones!
- By kayc [in] Date 01.03.06 09:28 UTC
I have seen a couple of 'practically' solid working ESS. Around 12 or so years ago when I had Connie (working ESS) we were on an invited Mock Trial, and one of the bitches there was to all intents and purposes a solid liver colour....her docked tail was quite long to leave the tiniest tuft of white at the end and her muzzle was heavily roaned. She did have the tiniest whisps of white dotted over her body, strands of hair rather that blocked, so when wet she looked completely solid.....a few years later she also produced a litter of 'normal' (tic) liver and white markings but one pup was nearly solid, with just a whisp of white on the tail, that when the tail was docked, she lost the white marking....again her muzzle and flash were heavily roaned..

>usually the working type ones are the whitest ones! ..

that was my Megan :)  Only her head had the most beautiful liver markings and a smattering of liver down one side....if she was sitting a certain way, she looked pure white
- By Phoebe [gb] Date 01.03.06 12:40 UTC
I don't think it's a dog at all - it's really an elaborate form of those inkblot psychological tests and Desmond Morris is having a good laugh at us all. :D
- By Missie Date 01.03.06 12:49 UTC
Has anyone read this book? Whats it like?
- By Lori Date 01.03.06 13:20 UTC
I have it and am up to page 100 of 718. That's how I got started on our cover dog. It's a dictionary of dog breeds - over 1000 of them as the title says. Each dog has a summary of its history (breed make-up and origins), uses, and some personality traits. It's strictly a reference book and not one I would get to help me pick a breed to live with. There are only drawings of the dogs, not photos. But you can find photos on the internet.

It is very comprehensive and interesting if you want to know about lots of breeds. You can PM me if you have specific questions.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 01.03.06 13:25 UTC
Just out of interest, in the 'credits' does it mention anything about the cover photograph?
- By Lori Date 01.03.06 13:30 UTC
Just "Front cover photograph of Jack Daniels copyright Jane Glasson." I've done loads of search on those terms but with no luck. I'm looking for an email address for Desmond. I'm sure he'd like to answer this question.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 01.03.06 14:22 UTC
It would probably be better to email the publishing company and ask for a contact for Jane Glasson. I doubt if Desmond Morris had anything to do with the cover photo.
