Out of our litter of 11 Weimaraner puppies, now 2 weeks old we have one that is less than half the size and weight of his brothers and sister.
He is now finally starting to put a bit of weight on - he does feed off mum (when his litter mates aren't pushing him out of the way) and he is taking Whelpi from a baby bottle 3 times a day as a top up. I just wondered if he will always be on the small size or if runts do catch up? He has always been lively enough, but very skinny (you could see his ribs and backbone initially) and hasn't really grown very much since birth - he has only put on 7oz in 2 weeks - the others can put that on in 3 days.
I thought he might be a bit late developing generally but this morning, 14 days after he was born he opened his lovely blue eyes! All the others have yet to follow. :)
Hi
I have Weimaraners too and breed them. I can say that the runt of the litter does catch up. Only yesterday I was sent photos of the smallest boy in our litter of 10 puppies, and he is huge. The rest of the puppies were about 1LB in birth weight. We had a record weight on one pup 1LB 40z and he was a huge puppy but when he was 7 weeks was second smallest, so it does not always mean anything, well I dont think it does.
It is always advisable to have a health check done at 6-7 weeks, so the vet can check for heart murmours, as they are not talked about much between Weimaraner breeders, but odd ones crop up from time to time and can cause slow growth. I know of a Weimaraner however with a small heart murmour and a huge dog. So you never know do you...

I forgot to say that I always keep a good eye on the small puppy and give nutridrops which you can buy online. They are a vitamin suppliment. You will probably find he picks up after his first worming. One last tip, dont sell him until you are sure he has got over this hump because they can die.

It really depends if the pup is small because there is something wrong with him, or if he is small just because he wasn't getting enough nutrition inside the dam.
The smallest can end up the biggest in the litter! Or, if there is something wrong internally, then they don't.
