I've been given an assignment for my grooming course where we have to write about defects / illnesses etc on various parts of the dog, eg skeleton, nervous system, teeth, digestive system etc etc etc. I've had a quick look on Amazon and dog anatomy books seem to be about £65 or £85 each!! Can anyone suggest a few more affordable books that are likely to give me this sort of information please?? :-)

Ask your library to get it for you??

Depends how in depth you need it, but if you go to a good pet store you may find a book with general health care, that may be good for all sorts such as hip dysplasia, eye problems, teeth etc...

Hi Val, I'm not a member of a library at the moment, but in any case I can't ask them to get me a book when I have no idea which books would be good! Have searched under 'illnesses' rather than 'anatomy' now and come up with some possibles. :-)

Don't forget to check out Ebay for books.  I have managed to buy a couple of superb books off there.  The last one was retailing over £30 and I bought it for under £15 incl p&p and it was mint condition.  Only thing is that there is always fierce bidding for academic books so you have to watch carefully and make sure you stick to your top price inc.p&p.  I am actually watching one at the moment.

Also I have found that although latest edition books are preferable they are not always essential.  If you look in college/uni libraries they rarely have the latest editions and yet these are perfectly adequate for assignments.  Earlier editions are usually cheaper and easier to get hold of.

The book I have is called "Owner's Guide to Dog Health", by Lowell Ackerman.  I got it from Pets at Home a few years ago - they don't have it anymore, but it's not an old book so I imagine you could still find it somewhere.  Cost me around £20 if I recall, it's about an inch thick - it covers all the body systems and the problems specific to each - just the sort of thing you need, by the sound of it!

Why dont you seach the web, i have found it very useful, I to am doing a grooming course  and have a folder stuffed with information on dogs, have done all my assignments and really enjoyed it, have just finished canine  evolution, that was so interesting. Have a look on Amazon for a book called 'Veterinary Notes for Dog Owners' by Trevor Turner, it might be usefull, and also not too expensive either :)

I finished a VN combined Degree/NVQ course last year. I found the following books very useful for both elements, probably more indepth than you want but quite useful little textbooks and still refer back to them now that i am in practice. Both cost in the region of £25.
