- By caileag [gb] Date 26.02.06 16:49 UTC
hi guys,

just wondering if there is anything in particular you would use to get weight on raw fed dog????  i have been advised to basically up his amount of food, but was wondering if there is a specific meat that would be good for this??

would anyone use beef suet???

thanks

Tripe is good for putting on weight.  A friend of mine whose dog is fed raw, added some mixer to the food for a little while to put weight on.

I have fed beef suet in the past for weight gain,it did work and made their coats alot shinier too :) As ridgielover said, green tripe is excellent for this purpose!

Hi Caileag!

dont know if this is any use to you,But I was taught (many moons ago) by my mentor when I was working with Racing Sibes, that Poultry fat was best as it has a lower melting point so for the working dog it is assimilated better (more quickly) for energy metabolism...so turning that on its head I guess for a working dog that needs weight Beef suet would be better as not totally burned off (??)
I tend to go with Poultry fat as it works for sedentary sibes (which I have at present) and working sibes as it was taught to me.
Satin balls are for a 'quick' weight gain bear in mind.
Hope this helps :D

thanks guys,

husky gal, i dont want to appear stupid (too late!)  but where can you get poultry fat???  the beef suet is easy, you get it in packets in the supermarket:cool:  can you buy poultry fat the same way???  i've never seen it.
- By HuskyGal Date 27.02.06 11:44 UTC
lol, no its a good question!
I dont use Supermarkets I'm afraid for my meat, have a great little butchers in the village (mind you they are a bit old fashioned and still close for 'Half day on wednesdays'! so sometimes I get caught short and use tesco!)
I havent had to use this for a few years now,but when i did it was Goose fat..I still buy it now but for my roast potatoes! (Mmmmm ;) ) My Butcher makes his own in tubs.
So I suspect thats your best bet..chat up your local butcher! (then they chuck in a few 'extra' meaty bones to the bag)
:D

cheers husky gal,

i am in talks with our pal who is a butcher and is going to give us a lot of stuff very very cheap:cool::cool: lovely man!!but in mean time have to use tesco etc.  i will ask him about poultry fat.

do you feed your husky raw????  if so, could you give me a rough idea of what he gets each day???  pm if you feel happier that way.  i do think its me not feeding him enough that he isnt putting weight on, but as this diet is new to me i'm a constant worry and dont want to overdo it.  but maybe i'm not giving him enough.  he is also loosing ( i can never spell that word?? no matter how i type it it looks wrong:mad:) his coat at the moment which can take a bit out them.

thanks

Hi Caileag :D

I have the opposite prob! Our boy came to us as a rescue, and was Obese for a Husky (at 15 months ) so we've had a delicate task of gentle reconditioning (feeding/excercise)
I'd probably err on the side of Lamb/beef than poultry for putting weight on and there's a good thread going on at the Mo about tripe, check it out.
When I first started working in a racing kennel I remember thinking; "This isnt a fun job!?? Im not out whizzing around on sleds..Im more of a 'Commi Chef'!!!" lol!!! after cleaning out kennels the vast majority of my time was spent preparing meals! and each dog had a different amount.Taught me alot!
At the moment Im half and half Barf (on seperate days!) as Im keeping weight 'down' its poultry mainly 1/2 chicken carcass or rabbit carcass.
Try these two links Im going to give you,The first one is good for you as its a  useful tool for you to calculate a way to get to the ideal weight for your dog.
the second link is a calculator (all these percentages really get me  so I find this helps!)

Boneapetit feedchart you can rpint this one off too :D
AndThis one if you scroll down about half way down you'll see a cartoon picture of a calculator, click on this and it will help you do the nesc. calculations for whats needed to feed your dogs body weight..or ideal body weight in your case.

Hope these help :D

sorry.. the calculator link hasnt worked  dont worry still click on it but put 'Raw feeding calculator' into the search on that page and you'll get to it
:D

Urrrgh..Im having a 'bad link' day forgot to say in the feed chart link the ratio they use is RMB:Veggies....for us of course this would be RMB:(offal, muscle meat, egg, veggie liquid etc.)

thank you for that husky gal!

i have upped his food at the moment so will see how he does.  it just seems like such a lot he is getting compared to all the guidelines on raw feeding.  but maybe he just needs more as he is working. i suppose all the guidlines are for 'pet' dogs?

i'm probably just worrying too much!  he seesm happy enough so i think he just needs more food!!
