Hi, I do the 'top knot' as you call it, like this.

Using a soft sliker brush, brush the hair completely over to one side, using thinning scissors cut the hair that is longer than the side of the skull. Then brush the hair all over to the opposite side and do the same again. Then brush the hair to the back of the skull, with the thinners trim the hair off the back skull, and trim as far forward as the middle of the head. The top knot should not be flopping forward. A little finger and thumb work to remove some hair from between the eyes and to thin out the front. Do a little, then slicker brush to check how it looks.

Have fun. :)

The same with thinners.  I do English Cocker heads with thinners too but don't leave it longer at the front, like the Yankee.

Yeah, just, the head. :)

I always think of top knots as being pulled up and back in an elastic band, like Poodles. Mind you, I have seen many a Yankee with so much hair left on, that it could undoubtedly be tied back:eek: It's not a good look.

I've always thought it was a topknot too. I do George's much how you describe Dawn, except I daresay I don't end up with such a good result!! Our grooming college has us clipping all the top of the head off with an English cocker though!

I do wish that these places would have a power cut, then they'd have to teach the students to work with thinning scissors, although I suspect the tutors wouldn't know how!!
You get a so much more natural result without clippers - the difference between an old lady's shampoo and set and a blow dry!!!!
