Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / WARNING - dangerous toy
- By bagpipe [gb] Date 20.02.06 11:55 UTC
Hello all

Sorry, I know this is a bit off topic, but since this is the most read forum on Champdogs, I thought I put my post in here.  We  had a most horrible incident yesterday with a treat dispensing ball.  I posted a photo and what happened on another dogforum.  Here is the link: http://springthing.3.forumer.com/index.php?showtopic=5789

So please be aware!!!!

Regards

THANKS FOR THAT - just bought one of these off ebay but won't be using it.

Glad to hear Fipps is okay now - how old is Fipps?

She is a (nearly) seven month old Welsh Springer Spaniel.  So a medium breed, but her jaws are not as big as that of an adult quite yet.

I have one of these too, fortunately Molly hates the noise it makes  and won't go near it.

I had one of those a few years ago, but luckily the dogs did not like the noise it  made, so it was put in the bin.

We bought one of those for Shay ages ago. He was able to bite large lumps of the plastic out of it within minutes (large Xbreed) so it went straight in the bin :( Thankfully, he didn't hurt himself in the process.

Poor Fipps! We have something with a different design but the same idea, from Canac I think - holes are only 1 cm across so hopefully no danger, but I won't be leaving them unattended with it! :-(

Thank you for that!  I was going to buy this very thing for Copper as he empties his kong far too easily.  And I may well have left him alone with it too to keep him busy while I am out.  Definitely off the shopping list.

Will avoid that type of toy like the plague then.I'm glad to hear your dog is ok. Our pup managed to get his bottom jaw stuck in the bars on his crate a while ago. His teeth got wedged somehow below the door, luckily the door wasn't closed & we were there at the time as he panicked & couldn't free himself. Know what you mean about wobbly legs, I felt sick for ages.

my dog when a pup got stuck on the bars of her cage too! she screamed and i had to pull her off! soon after that i gave up on the crate incase it happened again! i think the toy should have a warning that the hole should only be made big enough for a treat to fall out- not for a dogs jaw to go in

My 5 month old Doberman bitch has the exact same treat ball and I can't imagine her jaw getting trapped in the opening, it's way too small???

One of my last litter of pups also got his jaw stuck in his crate.  I was nearly crying, he was going mad, and we just couldn't get him loose.  All of a sudden he relaxed and just came straight out again!

There's also the rope with two balls on the ends, where the ends of the rope doesn't come through!  It is joined on by a metal bar and if the dog manages to get through the tennis ball this bar could go right down their throat.  I will have to try and do a photo too!

It looked as her lower jaw was stuck, she also bleeded a bit so I think there was some tongue involved, too.  I think if the dogs jaws are big enough (large breed) then it might be quite safe.  Although I will never ever use it or recommend it.  I took the ball (with the blood sticking to it) to the pet shop this afternoon where I got it from and they will send it back to he manufacturer with my name and address.

Thank you for that post :)

Wish I hadn't read all this really, Max has one (medium size crossbreed) and he loves it, plays with it for hours, and it's the only thing that stops him chewing what he shouldn't when I leave him.  It's made me really worried to leave him on his own with it now.

My Spanish can go right through a Kong especially Lydia my 12 year old, she has very strong teeth :d

I have one of these treat balls and i can safely say it went in the bin as my shepherd could open and close the fastening and she had her tounge trapped in it and i had a hard job to open it ,she only used it 3 times and i could not open or close it properly afterwards (it was going in the bin anyway after the tounge incident ) but i do not think that it is a very good design so do be careful if you have one DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG ALONE WITH IT
- By keisha85 [gb] Date 24.02.06 14:50 UTC
I had exactly the same type of treat ball for Keisha, which ended up in an emergency trip to the vets, she got her nose stuck in it and I could not get it off.  emergency sedation and three vets plus a screwdriver got it off in the end, but she still (8 months later) has the scars in her mouth, between her canines and incisors.
thought it was just a one off, but obviously not

just a thought but have any of you that had a problem with this ball contacted the manufacturer and told them about it? I would be interested to know their response
- By bagpipe [gb] Date 27.02.06 11:36 UTC
I took the treat ball (blood and all) back to the pet shop where I got it from.  He said, he will send it back to the manufacturer with my name and address.  I didn't hear anything yet from them.  But if, I can let you know.
