Excuse me for being a bit ignorant, but can someone tell me what sort of 'bag' that you are meant to carry a puppy around in, before the second injection? We didn't know about socialisation when we had our other two dogs, which probably explains why Solo was terrified of hot air balloons, fireworks & helicopters. Although how you can find any of these to get them used to, I don't know!! thanks for any help. I would like to make a better job of it this time!

I do not know anyone who has used a "bag", generally people use their arms.  If the dog is too heavy you could consider a pushchair or alternatively be like me and put your dogs on the ground from Day One 2 weeks before they have their first injection.

Depends on you, the dog and where you live and the risks involved.

We just carried our puppy around every time we took the older dog for a walk. I just tucked her inside my jacket and then tied the bottom tight so that she couldn't fall out if she wriggled.

Being a JRT, Nips wasn't exactly a heavy load to carry around but I didn't bother with a bag. If the weather looked iffy I popped him inside my jacket! He never showed any inclination to wriggle out of my arms and loved being carried around like Lord Muck! What I did do, however, was have a very light puppy collar and lead on him - firstly because I wanted him used to the feeling of them before he was first walked and secondly because I used to put him down for a pee every now and again!

My shelties were carried in capacious jacket pockets when they were tiny and my deerhound pups ride around in an old rucksack. Despite that all of mine are chary of the odd hot air balloon that we get over, though of nothing else I know of.

It wont replace socialisation but as well as taking your puppy out loads with you there is also a sound CD you can get which has all sorts of sounds on it including fireworks.

Thanks everyone! We tried the CD with Solo, but unfortunately until she went blind at ten, she remained frightened of all loud noises, but strangely when she lost her sight, not her hearing, she was frightened of nothing then!! We will try & take our puppy into all situations this time around!

It's a long time ago, but I used an army surplus knapsack with a comfy blanket in the bottom for my collie cross as a baby. Not very Paris Hilton, but hey, it did the job. Any bag that you can hold comfortably at a convenient position so the pup is secure and can't jump or wriggle out is fine. I used to find that carrying the bag with the strap across my shoulder and bag resting on my hip was the best. And obviously, don't actually shut the puppy in the bag as it's meant to be like a pouch.

I use an old backpack (wide one) that I carry round the front (these pups can get quite heavy at times so useful). I often put a small towel in the bottom of it.

I always make sure they wear a collar or harness as its easier for something to 'grab' hold of if they wriggle to far.

My Malamute was carried around in a "HEAD" sportsbag and people used to laugh as her HEAD was sticking out of it :)

My GSD was smaller and I just used to sqush her inside my coat !

thanks everyone! I have just bought a bag in Daniels sale for a fiver which should do nicely, made of straw with a turquoise net flower on it. It will be the middle of May when we get her. My husband said , if you think I am going to carry that round, you must be joking. I said he could tuck her in his jacket!!
