Our puppies are 6 weeks old and feeding well but I wanted some advice on when or if they should be removed from mum. She is happy to be with them and feed them and I wanted to know whether we should be restricting this and when? If anyone has any advice I would be most grateful. Thankyou.
I always let mum have free access to her puppies for as long as she wants. This allows the milk to dry up gradually and has never caused any problems in my experience. :)
Yes, let her have access to them whenever she wants. As the days go by and they eat more and more solid food she'll feed them less and less, but will probably still be giving them a comfort 'top up' the day they leave. Make sure they have water to drink instead, though. :)
i usually restrict pups from mum if it is a large litter because if they are big enough and the all latch on they can actually knock her over but if it is a small litter then she will just kick them off. As for drinking water put a bowl of water down bring all the pups and mum over let them watch mum drink and they will quickly try imitating her its the easiest way to teach them and definetly expect one pup to sit in the bowl and paw slapping of the water just make sure there is only a small amount of water in it. just dont put the water on carpet or anywhere you dont want getting wet because those first few time of trying to drink they get more on the floor then they do in their mouths
