Hi all. Just wondering if dogs are allowed on buses/trains. I've tried asking but they seem to come back with different stories :( Thanks

Yes - but you have to pay for them - often the child rate:D

Hi
I often used to take 3 dogs with me to work on the bus and never paid for any of them. It may depend on the company you travel with.
Dawn.

On trains you can take up to two dogs free! On Bristolk busses dogs go free, but as has been said in a lot of other areas they charge a flat pet fare or child rate!

Mine go on public transport a fair bit as I don't drive due to insufficient eyesight!

yes you can take dogs on buses, for a small charge. maybe it might be best for you to phone your local bus company, incase it is not the same for all areas

Our local bus company has a policy of taking guide dogs, but all other dogs it is up to the bus driver at the time to decide, whether or not you can get on the bus.
I have travelled a few times on the railways with the dogs and had no problems, also I have never been charged for them either.

We've had the dogs on trains before - not had to pay extra though I wouldn't mind if i needed to. Buses I don't think we had to pay when we were in Dundee, but I've not used one since we've been in Poole. Again, if I had to pay I wouldn't mind. I just like the fact that they're allowed!

It always helps to reduce the possibility of extra charge if you can put the dog on your lap, or have it lying under your feet. :D At least when the conductor comes by checking/selling your tickets :) They're/it's not taking up space preventing a paying customer from being seated.
I'm always willing to pay, but haven't yet.

It's no fun going on a train though. I went to London once with one of my SWD as she was going to be a model!! I trailed up half of the train before anybody would allow me to sit near them, I don't think I'd do it again. It wasn't the same coming back though the people were much nicer. Lydia was absolutely brilliant she just laid down under the chair and never moved.

Are they allowed on tubes/undergrounds??? If I were to travel by train it would be a distinct possibility I would use the tube.

Any ideas?? Cheers, much appreciated!

In Glasgow (Scotland) Dogs are not allowed on the Underground but I've taken my dog (Cocker Spaniel) on buses and trains and never had to pay.

When I lived in London, they certainly were. when Crufts was in London the tubes were full of exhibitors and their dogs!

I live in London and although I steer clear of the underground (too stressful!) I've seen plenty of dogs down there before!

LOL Phillipa,
Nah, I'd probably place Wolfie against the wall, and use him/her to lean against:D :D

This is one of those times where it really pays off to have cute adorable dogs. :D :D :D EVERYONE wants to smile at them and have you sit nearby. I've seen the grouchiest old german men get all 'clicky' at mine when they thought no one was watching :D :D :D Took the girls when soaked and wrapped in towels on a really icky day..crowded train, and I had a seat immediately. Yep, they're spoiled over here :D :D ;)

I used to take Holly on buses when I couldn't drive. I seem to remember it cost 20p and I could only get a single.

Regarding dogs on the underground, I seem to recall someone on an email list telling us about her journey on the underground so I think dogs are allowed.

I recently took my G.B.G.V. to Coventry, via London Underground to Euston and then a Virgin train. I did not have to pay for her travel at all. I did howvever have a little trouble on the way home. My girl was sitting quietly between my legs not taking up any room or causing any trouble when a woman got on and said I don't think dogs should go on trains, I ignored her and she got up and got right in my face and said it again. I then asked her What she was doing on the train then. Some serious eyeballing ensued and then she got off.

LOL that told the old girl!!!

hi i live in se7 and dogs are allowed at the owners dissgression, this meaning if they don,t like ya face your dog can't come on. Dogs are free of charge although they use to be child rate. It can be quite annoying that its up to the driver, because you cannot guarantee your gonna be allowed on that bus. One day you'll have a driver who loves dogs and will say you can even stay down stairs with your little pooch, other times drivers will lie and say there is already a dog upstairs and others who can't stand dogs will just say no and there is nothing you can do about it.

London = Buses at drivers discreation - but i have only ever been refused if the bus is really full, and on tubes free of charge though you have to carry them up and down the escalotors - not much fun if you've got a large breed - or a cleo who tries to claw your back off cos she thinks you're going to drop her!!!!

InSouthend area and further out you dont have to pay anything for dogs to travel, we used to have to pay a 1/2 fare but it was stopped a few years ago.
