This article explains the legal situation very clearly.

so from what i have read you can keep them but need to have a licence

They are not like a dog in any way, need alot of human contact as well as socialization and obedience a must... Mine of 12 years just passed away from old age and he lived outdoors till he was 8 his mate passed away and then he lived indoors with us. If I knew what I know now I would of had him in doors from the beginning, he use to sleep in my daughters room till the stairs got to be too much... You can check him out on my profile, he was 27 in at the shoulder 158 - 162 lbs.... Also if you do a search on here Iam sure you will get alot of info :)

In the UK you need a Dangerous Wild Animals licence, and they need to be kept caged, as you would a lion. You can't just take them for walks like you would a domestic dog, for example.

they are advertised sometimes in the papers. i would hazard a guess that most are actually siberian/malamute/gsd crosses (also known as the utonagon:rolleyes:) . they are not wolf hybrids/dogs at all. if someone has said to you they have awolf hybrid, i would inform the authorities to check they had necessary paper work etc. a few 'breeders' out to make a quick buck have been caught out this way, as they have been advertising 'wolf dogs'. the dogs were removed untill they could prove otherwise or produce the documents to say they were legal wolf hybrids.

why do people want to keep wild animals anyway?? i much prefer them in the wild where they are supposed to be.

It will come as no surprise I wholeheartedly agree with my learned friend caileag :)
Be very careful of the misleading 'Wolf hybrid' advertising (which is doing nobodys breed any favours at the moment ) On that note you may find This article on Northern Inuit dogs interesting! It highlights the 'infighting' within this particular breed about the whole 'wolf hybrid' claims, and its just my opinion..but I think this is what set 'utonagons' apart from 'Northeren Inuit' (My belief the Utonagon guys have a much better kept house than the NI guys) just my opinion..or rather the impression I get from them :)

>i much prefer them in the wild where they are supposed to be.< :D here, here!

I'm not completely sure which breed you guys are talking about, but it might be the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog. It is registered under 1 FCI group and they are a lovely breed . http://www.wolfdog.org/index.php
I don't know why anyone would want to ban this lovely dog or keep it caged even :mad:, as they are very calm and well behaved. I just saw 2 of them at the international dog show in my city. They might need a slightly different approach, but still a very gentle breed.......

Oh and there's another breed I forgot to mention.... it's called Saarlos Wolfhund.
http://www.saarlooswolfhund.de/ never seen them in person though.

Yes they are both very nice animals :)
- By caileag [gb] Date 21.02.06 18:10 UTC
the saarloos and the czech are both lovely breeds and are no longer crossed with wolves. there are very very few if any in this country and are closley controlled over where and who they end up with.

the wolf hybrids usually seen in the high street with some guy boasting about it or for sale in the free ads are more often than not, bred for money, and are nothing more than a cross breed that cost a fortune.
