Hi, I have a 4 month old standard poodle bitch who is car sick. She dribbles like mad and is then sick. We don't feed her for a few hours before the trip and make sure she has been in the garden. We are trying very short journeys with nice things at the end but she is still sick after a very short distance. She is happy to get in the car so she doesn't have a fear of it. Our family and friends live further up country from us so we travel quite a bit, or rather, we did! Has any one any suggestions as we have not had a puppy with this problem before.

The dribble indicates she's actually feeling nauseus, so I'd think about where abouts in the car she's travelling - some dogs travel better where they can't see out - so maybe she'd be better in the foot well of the car, or a covered crate. Other trainers swear by ginger biscuits as given to pregnant women with morning sickness....

Have had poodles for 25 years or more and have always given them sealegs travel sickness tablets if they are drooling or sick, works wonders! I'd give a standard poodle one tablet about 2/3 hrs before travelling then another about an hour before. You will probably find you only need to do this for a couple of months and it seems to break the habbit. You can get them from your local chemist. :-D
Thank you for your advice. Just returned from a 2 mile trip with her sitting in the foot well at the front but she was very sick, all over my feet! I have tried ginger tablets but they have no effect so I will now try sea legs and let you know how we get on. As she is only a baby I will have to give her the child dose. Poor girl looks so poorly but once she gets home she perks up again. It is good to hear from people who have had a similar problem and managed to get over it.
Any suggestions as to how we stop her making our cats life hell? She just won't stop chasing him and as he is a mainly indoor cat he has spent the last month sitting on work surfaces to get away from her. Our previous SP and the cat were great friends so the cat is really upset about the demon that has entered our lives!

Please don't travel your puppy in the footwell of your car it is the second most dangerous place. A crate or a harness is much safer
Have you tried Stugeron tablets ? Over the counter from the chemists They are used a lot by obedience people as they are non drowsy making(never used them myself)
Just thought I would try as we are getting desperate and willing to give anything a go. Eventually she will travel in the back of our estate car but until she is able to travel without being sick I need to have her near me so I can try to catch what she throws up and then clean her up!
I wondered about Stugeron as that is what I use for myself and find they don't make me as drowsy as some of the other tablets, so I will give them a go.
A crate is out of the question as we need some of the boot space for camping bits and she will be a big dog when she is fully grown. At the moment I sit on the back seat with her, like having a baby! Unfortunately the seats are leather so it can't be a permanent thing and when we take the family out there won't be room for madam as well. Our previous SP's have all travelled happily in their beds behind the dog guard in the estate so we hope this one will do the same one day soon!
