Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Help - Urgent advice re: possible pyometra
- By SheenaireLabs [gb] Date 16.02.06 12:07 UTC
Any advice today would be very welcome please!  My 2 year old lab bitch finished a prolonged season 5 weeks ago (the season went for for about 6 weeks in total).  Well, today there is yellow/green (looks like puss)coming out from her vulva and I am quite understandably worried!  The Vet said to me during her prolonged season that I may want to consider having her speyed, but I don't want to spey her just for the sake of it.

Obviously if she's having problems then it may be the best thing to do.  I've booked her into the vet tonight, but I am sure the vet is going to suggest that I get her speyed.   Any advise pllleeeaaasseeee!

The last couple of days she has been licking herself in that area quite a lot and male dogs still show interest in that area.  She also seems a little bit swollen as well, which to be honest, hasn't returned to it's normal size yet.

I am not planning to breed from her.

Thanks, Jo.

It could be a vaginal infection rather than a uterine one - I've never had a bitch with a pyo but our little rabbit had pyo and the discharge was very dark and exceptionally smelly.

Hopefully that's not going to be the outcome for your girl however if you're not planning on breeding from her it may be worth considering having her neutered - even if not this time round, certainly I'd consider it if she has a further problematic season.

Sending positive karma your way - please update when you can.

regards, Teri

Our Rhodesian Ridgeback had pyometra and the first we knew about it was when she was spayed and the vet called us in to tell us it was lucky we had her done at that time.  As Lola recovered from her op it became apparant that she must have been suffering from symptoms for a few months, but as we had only had her for a while (she is a rescue) we didn't know her true personality.  After the op she became much brighter and energetic, a completely different, but still wonderful, dog.  One of the symptoms of pyometra is depression and lethargy, so if you bitch hasn't displayed any of these symptoms, try not too worry too much.  I'm sure your vet will put your mind at rest this evening.

Good luck!

Hi

Unfortunalty not all bitches show all the symptoms. I know of a bitch that was very well, eating, bouncing and her useuall typical self. The first symptom was green puss pouring out of her. She was at the vets instantly and spayed on the spot. The vet said how lucky she was as any longer she would of been dead.Looking back the only indication was her vulva hadnt shrunk back to its pre season size. Something that happens to if they are having a false pregnancy.

Hi sheenair
elabs,
I would have her spayed... rapid.
I've had one bitch with open pyo (where they lose discharge... not as hard to spot as a closed one) and one who was in season for 6 weeks and was diagnosed as having cystic ovaries.  Both were kept in at the vets when I took them in and spayed immediately.  Both had the discharge you are describing.

I had a bitch who had pyo and we almost lost her. The vet treated her for a stomach infection for a week. Instinct told me it was pyo. She was extremely lethargic and she became ill quite quickly. I would have her spayed as soon as possible. Let us know how you get on. I will be thinking of you. I hope all is ok
Regards
Jane

Hi everyone, just want to thank you all for your replies, it was really good to get well balanced advice.  Unfortunatley my little girl isn't so well.  The vet diagnosed an infection (not pyo, yet!), he took a swab of the fluid coming from her vulva and will have the results tomorrow morning.  What with her last prolonged season and several problems since he strongly advised that she is speyed immediately, so much so, she is booked in for tomorrow.

We discussed if I planned to breed from her, which I don't, and to be honest it would have only been a matter of time before I would have probably got her speyed anyway.  It's just that it seems to sudden. The time is definitely right though.   She's been licking herself all afternoon, and when she got up to go for a walk this afternoon there was litterally a tablespoon amount of fluid that had excreted, it was really nasty.  She knew something wasn't quite right bless her, you know that confused face they give you!!!!

Thanks again everyone, I'll let you know how she gets on.  Thanks again, Jo x

Will be thinking of you both tomorrow Jo - on the prayer list ;)

You're a good mum, spotting things so early on.  Give her a gentle hug from me and try not to be over anxious.
best wishes, Teri x
