I was speaking to a friend this morning who said he was just about to lay some turf reinforcer as his dogs had ruined all the grass he laid last year, apparently it is some type of plastic mesh that you lay over your grass, best done in the spring when grass is growing faster, after a while you can, feed, mow the lawn etc., but the plastic protects the lawn and hopefully will stop all the muddy mess I have in my garden, just wondered if anyone on this site has used it and what were the results...I am very tempted to get some as if it is good as it says it will answer all my prayers !!!

Apparently it is made by a company called Tenax, (Obviously other companies make it as well) Have done a search it does look good, but I want it from the horses mouth before I commit myself !!

No I couldnt see any prices, although my friend said (I think) he paid £140 for a roll that was 20 metres by 2 metres...would work out quite expensive on a large garden,,but would possibly save money in the long run

My girl totally ruined our grass, which had only just settled after we laid new down. We just have mud outside now which is a real shame as it looked so pretty just before we got her (although I much rather my girl than grass!) I think I might look into how this works as well. It would be nice to feel I could go outside without wearing welly boots....

I puta search on Google for Turf reinforcer, it came up with quite a selection.

Have a look on ebay they have a kind of matting on there its under the pet supplies.  The grass grows through it just the same.

I did look on ebay (Pet supplies) but nothing similar came up, however I did put in Turf reinforcer on Ebay, there was one result but I think that worked out more expensive than buying direct.

I am a Parish Councillor and have just been getting prices for this type of honeycomb matting, for our teen shelter area, and park areas. My personal concern about this type of matting in a garden with dogs would be that before the grass grows through it is visible, we have it at one park entrance already, and it would concern me that their nails could catch in this? Just my worry. I guess if it was possible for them not to use it until the lawn had grown through then it would be a very good idea.

Grow-Thru is a honeycomb mat that you lay over grass. Then the grass grows through it. It serves to protect the area, ie stops it becoming churned up or grass dying through wear. Once the grass has grown through the mat, you can barely see it, again in keeping with the natural look! This can then be mown over etc.

Thanks for your reply, the kind you describe is slightly different to the one my friend has, his came in a roll like netting and he just rolled it out. It did cross my mind about the dogs feet in it, I will have to go round and take a look..he has 3 GSD.

We used to use that green hard plastic netting under the place where the children's feet dragged on the swing and the grass would grow through that and its not very expensive. Not sure how it would be over a whole lawn though.

Is there a UK website that sells Grow-Thru? I did a web search and all that came up was tips on growing cannabis...

I found it so much easier to fence off the garden area with a nice fence.
It is great in the winter when it is very wet it protects your grass and in the summer you can leave the gate open for the dogs to play in the whole garden.
I have quite a large area that is for the dogs to toilet in keep clean and play in plus they enjoy thier garden much more when I open the gate and they run around having fun.
Of course I understand that not everyone has the space but those that do its worth thinking about.
