My son is planning a holiday with his girlfriend and is looking at Malta as a possibility. Has anyone been there? Would you recommend it?

We went to Malta two years ago. Don't go if you want sandy beaches, as there aren't really any :D It's a lovely small island. Travelling by bus is fun, if bumpy. Valetta has a lot to do. Areas of interest are mainly the Second World War history and there is also a lot of prehistory as well. A day trip to Gozo (a small island to the north of Malta) is a must :)

Went there many years ago and it's a very interesting island.There are lots of trips you can do  some scenic and some factual.The people are really freindly towards the british and most have a war tale to tell.We only had my eldest daughter who was a baby  at the time so we weren't interested in late nights but there wasn't an awful lot to do in the evenings other than stroll on the prom and sit and drink in some very nice bars.

I've always been interested in Malta as it's the official COO for the Pharaoh Hound.  Tell your son to keep a look out for tan dogs on rooftops ;)

I remember before I was going to Malta everyone kept saying " you will either love it or hate it" , I hadn't really heard this description for any place except Malta.

If depends on the holiday you want.

The hotels or the star rating I thought were a bit weak. I was there a day and upgraded from what was supposed to be a 4 star to a 5 star so this has to be a careful consideration. If you like site seeing and wandering around historical things thing it would be great. They speak English also so if you like that then it is a bonus. Very freindly people, low crime rate.

If you like a holiday in the sun only at the pool you can't go wrong wherever you go.

It is funny to see the old old cars left there from the war and most of them are still running.There is an M&S in the centre of Valleta.

The bus drivers are maniacs and I really do mean Maniacs , when people get on the buses they all cross themselves :-D, I wasn't sure if it meant something other than, " lets hope we get to out destination in one piece" :-D :-D

THe men can be a little like the italians ;-) but not in an over powering way.

It isn't a very cheap place to be honest BUT then where is now.

I went paragliding etc when I was there met a Irish family who to be honest made our holiday so good.

We stayed there a couple of years ago , but with friends who live there. Very good ice creams and of course every one speaks English. The Maltese also like the English which helps!! Lots and lots of lovely churches. The silent city is a must, although the bus ride is something else! There is a club scene in part  of the capital, forget it's name now , we took a walk round it, very lively and full of young people all dressed up to party . You certainly feel like you are far away from the West, and of course you can visit the bar where Oliver Reed use to hang out. I agree it's not the cheapest of places to go. The only thing I didn't like about Malta is they love to shoot birds, just about all birds it would seem. Since the island is on a migratory path for birds this is a problem. Lots of gorgeous glass made there as well. Interesting place , but I think if I was  a lot  younger it wouldn't be my first choice.

You are right about the glass - absolutely fantastic :) It was a good job that I didn't have a car otherwise I could easily have spent a fortune :D My daughter went there with the school netball team two years running and although she enjoyed it, she agreed that it wouldn't be her choice of a holiday :)

I went to Malta with my best friend for Millenium New Year.  We stayed at a hotel in Quaura (sp) but the lively end of town, where all the clubs and bars are is St Julian's Bay and is easy to get to on the bus routes.  Had a brilliant time despite it being out of season and full of pensioners!!  ;-)

Ive been to Malta twice as i love it.
Its not really a beach holiday and say more for the culture vultures,mingling with the locals.The Maltese are wonderful, friendly people and like the british.
There is a beautiful sandt beach in Mellieha Bay and paradise bay if you love sunbathing.Saint Julians is ideal for the bars and nightclub, casino.Silema is good for shopping they even have a marks and spencers there lolol.
Valletta is great with good markets and scenic boat trips.
Blue grotto is a must see you go out in little boats and see some wonderful caves and waters also the popeye filmset.They do a lot of diving in Malta if you like that sort of thing.All the pretty coloured boats in the harbours/bays etc.
 
 

I went to Malta last year with my mum and my daughter. My mum had been before and raved over it. To be honest I wouldnt go back - I think you get far more value for money in a place such as Menorca (and more for the kids I found). I also thought it was quite expensive. It was pleasant enough and a nice experience but not somewhere I would return to. My mum still loves it (she hasnt been to many other places tho!!) We stayed at Quawra which I wouldnt rave over. Valetta had loads of history and some great shops! We also visited Popeye Village which was very good - Bluto invited me back to his house which was abit worrying!
