Can anyone give me advice on the best materials to use and how to insulate a shed that I am going to convert into a kennel so it's warm in winter and cool in the summer.

Good luck :D I chickened out and instead of renovating old runs/outbuilding on my property I went for a company that Built my kennel/runs for me...bliss :)

But I did do some research and thought you might like to take a look at this then click on kennel construction & design plans there are loads of really interesting links.
    The site is a Lowchen site but the links go to lots of other breed sites too so theres a lot of reading, cherry pick what suits you and you can pick up some great tips and food for thought.

My OH has used polystyrene which he has scrounged from various places to insulate some of his DIY projects.

we insulated a kennel with ply wood nailed over the struts [ that hold it together] and stuffed the gap with straw, we put cork tiles on the floor and then nailed lino over that it was warm as toast even on the coldest of days.we also had the door cut 60/40 so the smaller bottom door could be left open, i tacked a hheavy blanket over the bottom space from the inside so it was like a curtain to go in and out. Luckily my dogs didntpull it apart or chew it, when we moved we left the shed as our new house had kennels already, its still being used today 9 years later by the new owners dog!
