Well today has been the final straw. Freya has eventually caused me to abandon a walk and bring her home. She has always been a puller so we used a harness after the halti riding into the eyes, but she is always better when I take the 2 out alone than when OH is with us. Or so I thought. Today she barked so much on leaving the house that I picked her up (it wasn't helped by the comedian in the close making barking noises when she did shut up!) and then she nearly had my arm off with the pulling. I got so mad that she wouldn't behave that I found myself telling her off in a loud voice whilst walking her back to the house. The problem now is that they're only had 5-10 out now, i can't face a walk with her that back espescially as i have her pead always (mainly cause OH has patience of a knat). I need help (and councilling). Where did i go wrong. She was walking ok but its all gone to pot and I'm so mad that I just don't know what to do.
Please help a stressed out teacher as these walks are the one thing that soothes and calms me before a night of marking. I'm off to practice the kick boxing ... not on the dogs though.
Thanks

Have you tried any OTHER head collar than a Halti? I don't like Haltis as yes, they do ride up into the eyes, but I've never seen that happen with a Gentle Leader. :)
It happened on mine with a Gentle Leader :(
Gentle leader rode into my girls eyes aswell - I find the dogmatic brilliant and haven't met anyone who has used it that has had a problem with it riding into their dogs eyes. So that's another one you could consider.
Karen
Tried the gentle leader but because she has a rather small nose/muzzle (can't think of correct term) we had to go back to the halti! Sigh will walking my babies ever be the same.
I think your best bet is to re-visit the head collar idea, but look at some different ones which don't ride up into the eyes.
The head collar would help prevent her barking as well as pulling.
Personally, I found that both the Halti and the Gentle Leader rode up into mine's eyes. The two I've found which don't ride up are the Canny Collar and the GenCom All-in-One.
Out of these two, I would strongly recommend the GenCom All-in-One. I've used a lot of head collar devices and this one is far superior to any of the others I've tried. It has never come off (unlike the Halti), it has never ridden up into the eyes (unlike the Halti and the Gentle Leader) and it gives you just as much control as any of them (unlike the Canny Collar - which admittedly didn't ride up, but because it fastens around the dog's neck like a collar, I found the dog could pull into it much more.)
So - I'd recommend the All in One. Here's the website:

What breed/s do you have onetwothree. Well all I can say is its definately worth trying. It was suggested that I take the Jan Fennel approach but that would take all day and frankly I'd like to give the girls a great walk before tea so that later we can have a good play. I don't have time for this in out fuss!!! Thanks
Oh don't do the Jan Fennell thing - those methods are outdated and not well-thought of by most trainers today.
I can't talk about the short muzzle problem because I haven't experienced that, but if it's just riding up into the eyes, definitely try the Gencom All in One. The Gen Com comes in 1 size, so you can't even buy the wrong size and it fits perfectly because the whole head piece tightens when the dog pulls, not just the part across the nose - so it's not possible for the dog to back out of it.
Well am going to order one tomorrow. Think I'll go for the all in 1. thanks for the advice :-)
AM now the proud owner of gencom all in one. I bought it at our local rescue centre even though it was a whole pund dearer. They didn't have the padded one but I'm still looking forward to a nice walk. Thanks for all the advice.
Has anyone tried the Dogmatic??? I've seen it advertised but am not sure, again it looks as though it has the potential to ride up.

The Gencon head harness is the best in my opinion it doesn't ride up to the eyes. Feels stronger than the halti, mine managed to snap his halti clip one day from pulling so hard & he was off!

i have a dogmatic for my dog and it is the only one i have tried that doesn't ride into the eyes. couldnot recommend it highly enought

There are loads of head halters on the market:
Halti
Gentle Controller
GenCon
Pullstoppa
Canny Collar
Dogmatic
Leadtrain
Dogalter
to name but a few.
They all work on the same principle but some appear to suit some breeds better than others and some dogs do not get on with any of them, either because they are poorly fitted or they are professional pullers (so to speak).
Dog training is not linear, there are lots of 3 steps forward, 2 steps back moments, but if you are consistent (and relentless) you WILL get there! :D
Good Luck
The key thing to remember is that none of them STOP pulling altogether, but simply make the problem more manageable, it is still necessary to train a dog not to pull whilst using one.

I use the Dogmatic! I have Boxers (short muzzle) and I have found them to be the only one that does not ride up the face into the eye (go for the leather one, not the fabric)
To be honest with you i feel you would benefit from a good obedience class, with an instructor to help you train your dog.

It's nice to have someone to help you.
I did take her to a class and she waked so much better when it came to showing off but when back in her normal situation well you'd swear she'd never had any training. I'm sure she did it to prove me wrong!!

iv'e been using a dog matic for a few weeks now. My 11 month old staffie was very difficult, now we can actually get on with training without her pirouetting around. Initially she was terrified , but after some sound advice on this forum she is managing fine. They seem a very good fit for dogs with short muzzles. There is a thread on the dogmatic.

Leather Dogmatic for me too. Spent loads of cash on all the others this was the only one that did not ride up into the eyes and impossible to get out of.
