Hi,
I am trying to find a breeder who has chocolate labradors from working stock. Does anyone know if this is possible as most people I have spoken to has said that chocolates are normally show stock only?

I know somebody in Cheltenham where I got my last chocolate girl from, would that be any use ?

Hi Lucy,

Thanks, Cheltenham is abit too far to travel, but if I don't have much luck then I'll bear that in mind.
Thanks again.

Chocolate labradors from working stock are very few and far between, I'm afraid. For various reasons the working side of the breed aren't keen. The occasional one crops up, though.

Thanks Jeangenie, I thought as much.

I think most types are showing.  America seems to have the working stocks.  They are much leaner and from what Ive read more active.

i got my choccy boy from a lady near Ripon. Both his mum and dad work all through the season, as do all but two or three of her dogs, and she's had quite a few chocolates amongst her last few litters. Out of the litter my boy came from, there was two choccy bitches and one choccy boy (the rest were black and chocolate and the split was quite even). My two labs look the opposite of each other. He's really athletic and stocky looking with lots of definition and a lovely broad head and chest (he's 30kgs already, and only 9mths !!), whereas she's petite, very feminine looking, and........has a lady's figure :D She came from a different breeder, who's dogs weren't of working type.

Lam,

A few triallers are starting to run chocolates. I'd guess that the first person to make up a chocolate FTCh dog (with halfway decent health clearances) will make a lot of money in stud fees.

You tend to get a mix of show/work/trial breeding in working chocolates. You couldn't get a purely trial bred chocolate yet. The best mating I've seen advertised was a field trial winning dog to a field trial award bitch.

If you want a top class working dog I'd still advise a black or yellow, (nothing inherantly wrong with the colour, you just don't get the depth of quality in the breeding yet) but if you really want a chocolate then if you shop around you should be able to get a reasonable worker.

I'll pm you the number of someone with a good chocolate dog that may be able to point you in the right direction.

No idea but I do love chocolate Labs - if I ever got one (unlikely as I'm Cavalier mad!) it would have to be a chocolate. :-)
