Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Dogs in kennel?

:rolleyes:Hi - i was wondering how many people keep their dogs in kennels outside?  Do they stay in these kennels in the winter - do some breeds cope better outside? What sort of kennel do you use - as i have read that many people use converted sheds - do you heat these in the winter?

Thanks - sorry about all the questions!

My boys sleep in a converted shed type kennel. We have totally insulated it and double glazed it so it is cosy and we heat it with the tube type heater. They have lots of vet bed to lye on and stand at the house door at 11pm as it is bed time so they must like it.

Yes, mine sleep in the kennel too.

It's a garden shed that has been insulated, there is electricity to power the light and a heat lamp which I have on a timer. The American Cockers each have their own crate, and Bailey the Irish Setter sleeps in a dog bed. They are out all year round, but of course the heat lamp isn't neccessary except between Nov and March roughly.  7 dogs in that confined space radiate quite a bit of warmth anyway. So I have no worries about them sleeping out in the kennel.

Kennel here.  Converted shed with polystyrene insulation on the walls and draught free beds.  I have a heat lamp for very cold nights but that's more for my reassurance than the dogs; they don't seem to care. Mine don't like being indoors.

We have 5 kennels that the dog commute between, they just decided one summer they did not want to be in the house and we bought 2 kennels and insulated than and the have an enclosed bed area at the rear, they are the neaverson ones with the fold down sides for the summer, we do not lock the door so they just come and go as they want, but we still have5 dogs that want to sleep in the house on a night so that is ok, if that is what they want

Outside in a police kennel with a built in run but when the nights are exceptionally cold - inside in the kitchen :)  I leave the kennel door propped open all the time so there's access to an external enclosure.

ye i would consider kennel with a heat lamp in the winter - do you leave them in when you go out or just at night - as with all the recent dog napping seems a little scary?

mine live out as well ..... we built their kennels ourselves and are insulated with rockwall.... they are powered up and if necessary they can have heat lamps on ... they have a run attached to each kennel  which has a covered roof ...... we use shredded paper for bedding ...... the dogs seem to like this better than the vet beds and its much easier to change and hygenic ...... they make a nest in it and are always warm and cosy ....

hi i dont think there is anything wrong with dogs living in out door kennels as long as the dogs are warm enough at night and in the winter, however all mine live inside all the time it does get abit mad when they all want to be in the kitchen at the same time , but i wouldnt have it any other way.
