2 day old pup screams and then goes rock hard like he's wooden for 10 to 15 seconds and stops breathing.
then goes limp and back to normal but gasps for a couple of minutes and then recovers. What could it be.I thought first of all it could be wind as I did bottle feed him last night, but he has been suckling from his mum today and it still happens.

obviously he needs the vet immediately, sounds like a fit
- By paxo Date 09.02.06 15:25 UTC
HE'S going down to the vet shortly I was just hoping someone may of experienced this
before with a pup so at least they could advise me of the outcome so I know what i am facing.
- By Herbiedax [in] Date 09.02.06 15:26 UTC
Not sure if its a fit, sounds like the wee mite is in pain. Seek veterinary advice asap. Why was he bottle fed last night?
- By paxo Date 09.02.06 15:32 UTC
He was bottle fed cos the others keep knocking him off and mum keeps pushing him away so I kept him with me and fed him through the night and kept him warm.I suspect it is puppy fading syndrome but I don't know if thats causing the other problem.
- By supervizsla Date 09.02.06 15:33 UTC
sounds like his mother knows something is wrong.
- By paxo Date 09.02.06 15:36 UTC
yes I agree anna but I still want to do what I can for him I know deep down its not good news, I had a pup with pfs once before and there isn't a lot we can do to help them. but it never did what this pup is doing.
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 09.02.06 15:33 UTC
Unfortunately it doesn't sound good what with mum not wanting anything to do with him.  Hope all goes OK at the vets and I'll be thinking of you, does sound a bit like FPS.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 09.02.06 15:37 UTC
If he's the only one his mum's rejected it sounds as though she knows best. :(
- By Fillis Date 09.02.06 15:43 UTC
Dont want to be alarmist, but please bear in mind that if mum doesnt want anything to do with him, she may (only may) reject the others if you keep putting him back, so please watch her like a hawk.

Does fps cause this rigidness and going rock hard
- By paxo Date 09.02.06 15:49 UTC

I had a pup do this at a few days old and got it breathing again.  At 13 days he was put to sleep.  Vet sadi it was Liver shunt, where the changes to the liver that are emant to occur after birth fail to happen.  the pup was very large born, and gained hardly any weight.

Sadly little one didn't make it to the vets, he died shortly after we left on the way there.
Any way thanks to everyone for your help and advice. At least he's at peace now.Bless him

R.I.P. Little one xx

RIP little one.
i am sure the mum knew and she will have known best.
better for it to happen now than for the little one to suffer
hope you are ok

That's sad news. :( Animal mums are very clever at detecting when something's wrong.

Sorry to read your news - as JG says, the bitch's instincts are so strong .
- By liberty Date 09.02.06 17:05 UTC
sorry to hear your sad news :( Thinking of you.
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 09.02.06 17:06 UTC
so sorry to hear that but the mothers definitely do seem to know.  Whenever a mother has treated a pup like that no matter what I've tried to do they've never survived.

Hope that the others are all doing well.

Sorry to hear that. I had one the same , so didn't post as it only lasted a couple hours after the " fits".

Nature is hard at times.
