Help Pls!!
I have to a point of complete  over the feeding of Eggs!
I use a raw egg to help bind my homemade salmon and sardine and meat pastes that I put in a Kong.

On my travels in becoming increasingly interested in Nutrition,I appear to have made a rod for my own back and got totally confused as there appears to be two camps on the rights and wrongs of feeding egg:

Ive found several schools of thought saying that Raw eggs must never be given to dogs as they contain avidin, a protein that destroys the B vitamin biotin

then conversely: Yolks contain plenty of biotin to make up for what the whites destroy

Can someone clarify for me please??...think Im stuck in a storm in my own egg cup ;)
thanks :D

I read that raw eggs shouldn't be given, but then at the same time I know plenty of people who advocate feeding raw eggs for the goodness they provide. I was so confused I cook the eggs I give my girl, but I would also like to know what the right answer is to this.

My old goldie would never touch raw eggs......she preferred them lightly scrambled with a touch of milk:rolleyes:

We had two dogs - lived to 12 & 16 years old - that would steal eggs from the hens :eek:

They would only ever take 1 each though ..... they were kind enough to leave the rest for us

The issue of raw eggs being a problem is only a problem if just egg whites are fed, which they used to be in the olden days for invalid food.

Egg yolks do indeed remove the need to be cautious.  Also if you are feeding raw anyway, biotin etc is available in many foods and I doubt very much that you could possibly be causing a biotin deficiency even if you fed 12 raw eggs a day.

Many dogs and people enjoy a raw egg in a smoothie etc, there is no need to be worried on the biotin front.

Raw eggs are great for putting a shine on their coats :) I was going to say the same as tohme, you may see a problem if you fed umpteen egg whites everyday, even then you would struggle.I have never heard of or seen a dog with a biotin deficiency

Mine have raw eggs 2 or 3 times a week, including shells :)

Great thanks Everyone! :D
Just wanted to clarify, in case there was some other reason.
Infuriating when some articles/books just put never feed eggs and dont substansiate it
Most of my breed specific literature is quite old now, so just wanted to check  there wasnt new research to negate it out there.

I read once somewhere to give a hard boiled egg just before bedtime to help put bulk on, so I do that occasionally as a treat, usually after a show. Does it matter whether the egg's boiled or raw?

Interesting, there is a famous hard boiled egg diet which reckons that the reasons they are good is that it takes more calories to metabolise one than raw................ go figure!
