Have just spent the last few days listening to one of our neighbours 'Tuning' up a car for one of his friends   Basically this seems to consist of revving the engine until it gives a shh sound at the end (very loud long revvvvvvshh) with minor adjustments until the engine starts to sound exactly like there's a hole in the exhaust   in fact no matter what car he works on he revs the engine mercilessly  (he told OH it's what they do at car races on tv?? OH pointed out that those engines are changed after the race ;) :D )

I'm at a loss to understand what he's trying to acheive... and why ;)  Our qualified garage mechanic friend maintains there's never any need to rev the engine in this manner ... but hey, what does he know? :p

can anyone out there throw any light on this ?

Simple..........
The louder it revs = the bigger he looks+the more his mates think he knows+ one f***** up engine!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D
We did that to the works transit van just before Xmas. BUT for a good reason, we had a rope tied around a tree trying to pull it out whilst getting an axe to the roots. Van decided to chuck water out left right and centre :( Water pump (?) had gone :( was fixed on friday after having half the engine stripped down!!! Mechanic says it might have been because of pulling the tree, Engine working but no air flow as vehicle not moving!!!

I can only think of 2 reasons you would want to do this 1. There used to be some stuff that you put in knackered old engins and you then had to run them at high revs for a few minutes to clear it out. 2. The guy is a plonker and doesne have a clue what he is doing except trying to look big and annoy the neighbours.

If it is really getting to you you could probably ge env. health round as most engines at max revs are around 100dB, which constitutes a hazzard.....

You could always tell him that race cars are tuned by computer these days ;)

I thought it was the same reason as big exhausts and big music systems in cars, big noise = little w***y :P

Yep - small men trying to look big.  We get this on our estate all the time!!  Young skinny guys in baseball caps driving round foot to the floor in a sierra cosworth  all souped up with a big wing thing on the back trying to look like stirling moss.  Come on guys.  Come back with the Aston Martin and I might (just might) be impressed.

LOL @ you all :D

Yep! I know about the inadequacy in the trouser area ;) and other areas :) :) his dog is enough of a hint ;) and so are the tarted up cars he drives :)  As far as the noise is concerned, I'm happy to let others do the complaining ;)  He's about 30+ so you'd think he was a bit old for boy racing etc

But I really thought he might have been trying to actually acheive something   he really wasn't impressed when my OH told him that the engines of cars at the races are then stripped down or scrapped :p

So there really is absolutely no reason why he would be doing this? - apart from the obvious ;)   He has enough 'friends' who give him their cars to work on

Have to say it can get really entertaining, especially when he took off the head gasket and then revved the engine as per usual (don't know if he had put it back on ) the garage, the car and he disappeared in HUGE clouds of smoke with liberal splashes of oil coming out   Troll girl and I nearly wet ourselves laughing and had to hold each other up that day :D :D

Ah well, as they say "you can't educate pork, you can only cure it!"  :D :D :D

Forgot to say,

When I win the lottery (ha ! it's going to happen one day :) )  before I leave this wonderful street, I'm going to rent a Ferrari (wouldn't want to actually own one ;) ) and park it outside for a week (preferably when none of them are around) and watch them drool and wonder, before I drive off to my new home :D :D
