Hi
I was wondering what Sharpeis as a breed are like. I know every dog is a individual and different but on the whole what are they like. Someone was asking me this morning as a neighbour has just brought a pup.
She was told they dont need exercise and are happy staying in the house. The new owner has health problems and was looking for a dog that doesnt need walking.
I know they can have skin and eye problems, This pup already has had to have a op on its eye and it has only just had its second innoculation and I believe it will need another one at a later date.
When I was looking for insurance for my dogs I noticed it was one of the breeds the company would not cover I did wonder if this was because of the health issues but I was told they are a fighting dog so classed as dangerous.
Just curious about them no other reason
Wendy
Love to know where they got this dog from because someone that I know has just acquired two, told the same thing and she has severe arthritis!!
She didn't know anything about the breed

Well call me an intolerant old baggage if you like but I don't think there's a dog in the world that doesn't need some sort of walking! A very old dog might well like to just potter around the garden but a pup should certainly go out into the wider world.

I feel sorry for this puppy already.
What sort of breeder would sell this dog, knowing it's future ?.

To answer your question i took this from 'choosing the right dog for you' by Gwen Bailey
'The Shar Pei is courageous and tenacous.' Exercise requirements 'Medium'. Calm. Independent. Affectionate. Wilful. Aloof.
'Good natured and wilful, Shar peis are independent and aloof and require early socialization to be tolerant of other dogs.'
Perfect owner ' Strong-willed, confident, affectionate owner who has plenty of time to care for and socialize this dog.

Goodness, it appears to say just the opposite to "She was told they dont need exercise and are happy staying in the house"
I wonder if it was a puppy producer, supplying pups for the pet market, and just wants then gone with the money in their hands, rather than an experienced breeder who is passionate about the breed, and who cares about placing their pups in the right homes?
I don't think it was a puppy producer that sold the two to my friend!! Just really don't understand some people. Litter brother and sister too, in my eyes that's just asking for trouble.
She's had loads of other breeds that last for only a few months so I'm sure these will be down the road shortly

ALL dogs
NEED daily excercise, and not just in the backyard either. They need outside stimulation, sights and sounds etc. Besides how can one socialise a dog in their home

I too feel sorry for this pup,the owner sounds completely unsuited for a such a strong willed, demanding breed!

I think the breeder was totally irresponsible saying shar-pei don't need exercise. For a start off, more than a lot of breeds shar-pei NEED to get out and about at an early age for socialization. Any breed not given enough input as a youngster will end up a basket case, but shar-pei are aloof to begin with and can be a real problem.
They don't need miles and miles of running a day, but they do need to at least have a potter round the block a couple of times just for their mental good health. If the owner has a large garden, they may get away with it (many people seem to do this nowadays), but I don't consider it any life for any breed of dog myself. Mine used to enjoy doing a brisk few miles a couple of times a week when they were young.
To be honest, shar-pei are not an ideal breed to get without doing a lot of research. They can be an absolute joy to live with and many lead a long, healthy life - my vet would have gone bankrupt relying on my two girls for custom! But more than any breed, you need to go to a reputable breeder and see as many relatives of your puppies as possible. I doubt somebody who will sell a person a puppy saying it doesn't need any exercise is a responsible breeder. Poor little puppy - I hope this wasn't an entropion operation that it's had!
As for shar-pei being fighting dogs - it's a bit misleading. Unlike pitbulls, they were never bred for the pit. They were originally a multipurpose dog bred by Chinese farmers. They could hunt game, guard the farm animals and were excellent at controlling vermin amongs other things. The fighting was just a way to supplement their owner's income via gambling and unlike in Europe the dogs didn't fight to the death. You'll notice the curly tail - the dog that lost was the one who dropped his tail first. Even then, they would have to give the dogs alcohol and drugs to get them to fight as they aren't that aggressive. When the Europeans brought in their fighting dogs, the shar-pei were no match for them.

HI
This person is a first time dog owner. And as far as I know has never owned a pet.
They have a tiny garden, but so do I and I have two dogs that are walked.
I am pretty sure it was a entropian op it has had. My friend said it was because the eye lashes were rubbing on the eye. and it needs to have another one.
I personally dont think this dog should of been bred if there is entropian in the line. I know some breeds do have problems with it, in which case you dont breed from them and try and breed it out. Just goes to show what type of breeder it was.
