I have a two year old Black and White male cocker spaniel that we are unfortuntely having to rehome. He is a lovely dog, but is extremely excitable when on the lead and requires a great deal of excercise. I would be grateful for advice on reputable organisations/contacts who may be able to help. I am already in contact with the Cocker Spaniel Club Rescue.

I am very sorry to hear that you are having to consider re-homing your Cocker Spaniel. Have you notified your breeder? I know that I would want to know if he were one of my puppy's - in fact I have it on my puppy contracts that ' if at any time during the dog's lifetime the new owners are unable to keep him they will contact me and arrange to bring him back or else I will collect him'. I'm sure your breeder will be only too pleased to help and advise you. Are you absolutely decided that this is the only option, or might further advice from the board be of any help - for example training ideas etc?
Good luck
Jackie

I have nothing to do with Cockers , but I was just wondering why you need to get in touch with anyone else if you are already in contact with Breed Rescue?

Is he a working strain cocker or show strain? You need to make sure you're in touch with the right rescue:-)

Thank you all so far for your notes. I thought it was easier to register, so that I can talk to you. Our Cocker is a show strain, but he definately has some working characteristics about him. he loves swimming and sniffing - he is lovely, but we just can't give him what he needs. Plus we have a labrador and he is affected by this. The Cocker will not play with him, he has to have all the toys and play retrive on his own. We have thought this through over a six months period, and although it will break our hearts, we feel it is best for him and our other dog. I have asked for more contacts as I want to ensure that we find the best home for him possible.

Hi Caroline,
Have you spoken to your boys breeder? They'd almost certainly want to know and might be able to have him back. Alternatively they might know of a good home for him.
Coker Spaniel rescue are very good - they vet the homes really well and wouldn't pass him on to just anyone.
I hope it works out ok for you,
Fiona

Hi Caroline
If your breeder won't help (& shame on them if they won't!), then I would just let Cocker Rescue help you. I don't know where you are but I know the lady who does Cocker Rescue in the SW usually always has people waiting for an older Cocker (ie not a puppy) & I imagine the situation is similar elsewhere. Homes are vetted to ensure they are suitable (I have done this for Rescue when potential homes come up in our area) & the people who work for Cocker Rescue know more about Cockers than the average general rescue organisation & so are arguably the best people to help you
Good luck anyway!

Thanks for the advice. I will try the breeder and if not get back on to Cocker Rescue. It is nice to know that the homes are vetted - obviously we want to ensure that he goes to a good home. This has been my main worry - knowing who is reputable and reliable.

Our Cocker is called Dino. He is just two and Black and White. He is a very loving chap who loves home comforts. He is very good in the house (only the odd accident when he gets a bit excited) - he is also obedient when he is in the house or the garden.
The main problem we have is when is out on a walk. As soon as the lead is taken out of the cupboard he starts going mad - running around and yapping (not barking, but more an excited talking). When he is out he constantly runs. He currently has a harness, but we have tried a halti but it doesn't seem to work. He absolutely loves sniffing, swimming and running around. We do not have the trust in him to let him off the lead, but I do beleive that with enough one on one training he would be OK. He loves playing retreive - again though on a one to one basis - he gets annoyed if our lab tries to join in as well. He is pretty selfish - and wants to do things when he wants them. I have no doubt that someone with a great deal of time could train him well, however we can not give him this extra time - especially with having another dog. We are in Northamptonshire. If you are interested then I will email you direct.

I have a 7.5mth old Cocker puppy and she's exactly the same as your Dino. She yips all the way round on her walk and never walks anywhere - she runs, with her nose to the ground :) All cockers are like that though - they are busy little dogs that use their noses all the time.
Have you ever tried a half-check collar? We've got one for Holly and she walks alot better on that than she does on an ordinary web collar.
All of the problems you ahve with Dino can be overcome but they would take time - if you're sure you don't have the time then talk to his breeder about them taking him back. Did you sign a 'contract' when you bought Dino? If so you really should give his breeder 1st option on having him back.
If you're not sure where to find his breeder, let us know his kennel name and those of his parents and I'm sure someone on here will know his breeders details.
