my pupies are 3days old. Has any one got advice on whether or not we should assist with suplement feeding? If so is there any particular way we should aproach it? My concern is that my dam is coping well but I worry about her becoming tired. Also if we should assist do we feed in the whelphing box or on our knee in a seperate area out of the dams sight.

Hi Jazz1
If the puppies seem contented and well fed, are happy and quiet, there's no need to suppliment their feeding. If it's not an overly big litter for a Yorkie there's no reason the dam should be getting more tired than is usual.

Hi Jazz1
As Surannon said,if puppies seem content there is no need to supplement feeding :)
Is this your first litter?
I worried about my girl getting tired with our first litter (8 pups) but my vet reassured me she would be fine.
After all they have been preparing for it for 9 weeks and if their diet was and still is fulfilling all of their nutritional needs, then she should be fine.
Good luck with your babies :)
And make the most of them,as they will be leaving for their new homes before you know it :(
I broke my heart when mine left :(

Hi Jazz1,
Just leave mum and puppies be, she will need to be with her pups constantly for the next 2 weeks for some heavy feeding, she will get tired, and rest with her pups, but that is all part of motherhood, her milk is the best thing the pups could ever have and unless there is a problem, that is all that they need. Your Yorkie will cope just fine, dogs have been having litters long before we were around to help, the pups will need no extra food from you until she begins to wean them, then by all means you can be on hand to whip up some food for the pups.
Just make sure that your bitch gets plenty of food and water.

when you say tired do you mean physically tired or sick and tired of her pups. The reason i ask is when pups feed mum usually will nap so becoming physically tired isnt so much a concern if she is on a complete puppy food and is eating very regularly. If you mean sick of her pups it will become obvious because she will kick them off and growl at them.
you should never interfere with a natural process if all is going well health wise and mum wanting to care for her babies because while you mean well you would be more likely to cause more problems pups dont generally want formula if they can have mum's milk so most will refuse it.
