Hello just wondering if there is a min age a dog has to be to go to kennels? & if they have to be a particular age to have the kennel cough jab? I have a five month old pup, who's well socialised & know of a really good kennels. Not intending on him going @ the moment but just nice to know that I can use them if I need to. Any advice would be appreciated

the kennels where i work takes them from puppyhood , as long as they had their jabs and the kennel cough vaccine then they can come. i think 12 weeks was the youngest - but he loved it and has done ever since!

Thanks. He's had all his other jabs so I'll get his kennel cough done next week then. :)

I put my dogs in when they were 5 and a half months. The kennel staff love having puppies in and gave them lots of attention - it made for a really positive experience and they love going back there now!

The youngest I ever boraded was 4 months, but she was with her Mum and it was only over a weekend.

this probs isn't something you want to hear but i think i better put another side to this discussion.
we put our dogs in kennels and the vizsla was 6months, they both got kennel cough (vaccine doesn't protect against all strains) and the older one had it mildly. unfortunately the viz had not built up her immune system and after visiting the vet in the morning about her looking slightly under the weather and coughing, by the afternoon she had pneumonia and they were contemplating putting ehr in an oxygen cage. luckily she overcame it but it was hit and miss for that night.
not meaning to scare you but just remember that their immune systems are no where near at their best at that age

We boarded ours at 4 1/2 months - only over a weekend, and they stayed in the same kennel together. I was a distraught wreck when we left them, but they had such a good time they ignored my OH when he went to pick them up!!

I put mine in overnight when he was 6 months so his first visit wasnt when I was abroad, that went fine, so I was content to put him in again for a week. He loved it.Do dogs have a concept of time? I have read that they dont, what do you think?

Ask the kennels each will have their own policy; this also applies to KC. Not all kennels require it as it is not 100% effective against all strains and even if your dog HAS had the KC vaccine it does not necessarily make them immune to contracting KC.

My local kennels requires the Kc vaccine, but I didn't know it wasn't 100% effective. I'm getting it done tomorrow anyway & my vet said that the is a new kc vaccine that last 1 yr now which is good.
