A friend of mine is looking into getting a pup from the Republic of Ireland and was wondering if there are any special procedures that she needs to go through?
Would the procedure be the same as getting a pup from a local breeder, or would it be like getting a up from mainland Europe?
Any info that I can pass on would be great.

Didn't you ask this question before? Or maybe someone else did - why not do a Search - you should get the answers that way!

I did do a search, but all the threads I found had old info, and legislations changed since then.
Ive contacted the relevant govt deptartments, but no replies yet

Why is your friend getting a puppy from Eire? I hope she is doing her homework first as there are so many puppy farms there.
There are no restrictions on bringing a puppy or dog into the Uk. This is the reason why this route is used so much by the puppy farmers and dealers to flood the UK pet shops with sickly puppies.

Im not too sure on that.
I think she is just impaitent and wants a pup as soon as possible.

There are alot of back street breeders and puppy farms in Ireland and the rescues are over run with them. They do get shipped over by rescues by i dont know how it works.I know there is a fee to be paid for transportation. What breed is she looking for and is it a rescue or a breeder? If its a rescue i do know of one rescue center that do ship in from Ireland to help ease the over crowding they have there.I could look into it for you if it is a rescue if not im sorry i cant help. :)
I bought my dog from friends in the Rep of Ireland. He was Irish KC registered and it was fairly simple to register him with the Kennel Club here. Is your friend going over to Ireland to collect her puppy and has she checked that it will be registered? I chose mine at six weeks and collected him at 8 weeks and flew him over from Dublin to Bristol (just over an hour) I felt awful, handing him over to the staff at the airport as he couldn't travel in the cabin with me. I worried about him all the way over, but he recovered from the experience much faster than I did!
There are puppy farmers in Ireland, as everywhere else, but there are also caring and responsible breeders. Are you allowed to say what breed it is?

Ireland has more than its fair share of puppy farmers, true, but there are many many responsible breeders to. A buyer simply needs to exercise the same caution that they would buying a pup anywhere.

Hi Lior,
I live in Ireland, the puppy farming is no worse here than it is anywhere else. I suggest you contact the Irish Kennel Club. They should be able to put you in touch with the relevant breed club. Or you could attend a championship show here. The next big one is the Paddys Day show at the Kennel Club show center( right beside Dublin Airport) March 17th. I don't know if you want to say what breed you are after, if you do then maybe i can put you in touch with the relevant club. You can take the pup straight to the UK with no quarantine. Do make sure that the pup is registered here otherwise you won't be able to register it in the UK. I done the opposite, i bought a pup in Wales and brought it back to Ireland, it's very straight forward, the only problem i had was that i missed the boat back.Personally, i wouldn't have the heart to put an 8 week old pup in the cargo hold of a plane, it could scare the living daylights out of him, i would suggest the ferry.

Just because you are of the opinion that puppy farming is not worse in Ireland than anywhere else, it does not make it right or acceptable. However, as there is no legislation for commercial breeding in Eire and therefore breeders are not inspected. It is only the ones that get raided that attract media attention or filmed undercover for a TV investigation that are heard of. The others continue to operate breeding excessive amounts of puppies that are sold to dealers and end up in pet shops in the UK or exported to the USA and the Far East. Anyone that has knowledge of the puppy trade is aware of its clandestine activities. Is it not long overdo that legislation was introduced in Eire to curb the excesses of dog breeding instead of offerering grants to farmers to go into dog breeding? We are overflowing with surplus dogs created by the greed to make a quick buck from the defenseless breeding bitches that are forced to produce puppies each season to feed the puppy trade, how much longer can we allow this to continue?

Pat,
I never said that puppy farming was right or acceptable, i said it was no worse here than anywhere else. i agree that there should be legislation here, the kennel club & government are working on it at the moment. As for people recieving grants to set up as puppy farmers that is absolute rubbish.WHERE DID YOU GET THIS INFORMATION.I am not trying to defend puppy farmers for one minute. However i will defend the responsible breeders in this country.
You would have everybody think that we're all puppy farmers here, would you not agree that there are some very responsible breeders here and there are also puppy farmers in the UK . If somebody wants to come over here to get a pup they should exercise the same caution whether buying in Eire or The UK or anywhere else for that matter. If UK pet shops are buying from Irish puppy farmers shouldn't the kennel club or government address this. If there is no market for the farmers then maybe it would curb their breeding. To the best of my knowledge Irish pet shops don't sell pups.Maybe it should be the same in the UK.If somebody has pups for sale here they put a notice in the petshop window, then the buyer can go and see the parents and the environment in which the dogs are raised. The buyer will suss out whether or not it's a puppy farm in 2 minutes.

I forgot to mention that the Irish kennel club do a show date catalogue, this lists all open and championship shows and breed club secretarys.
You could ask them to send you a copy, it's free of charge to IKC members, it may be free to everyone.
