Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / bakers puppy food for large breed?
- By colinscott [gb] Date 02.02.06 23:22 UTC
I have just tried my 10wks old douge de bordeaux puppy on the bakers puppy dry food today and he seems to love it as opposed to the pet's at home's own brand he was on before. My only concern was that it dosen't say it's for large breeds like the other one did.Is there much of a difference in the way it's made or is it pretty much the same thing? I suppose the main thing is that i've found one he likes right.....Also i was wondering what you guys think about feeding chicken raw as a couple of people have warned me against this incase of salmonela but i've read on this forum about feeding it raw and thats what it says to do on the packet,I mean i'm ok with giving him other meats raw, just a bit wary of the poultry.

Hi,i feed my boxer bakers (rich in beef and rich in chicken) and hes pretty large, and he likes which is the most important thing,as for raw chicken, thats fine,i used to give my dog raw tripe, but that didnt go to well, hope that helps

Hi

I know it might be hard to find a suitable food for your dog, but before you settle on the Bakers, I would urge you to try a bit harder and check out some other brands.

Even if I try to be extremely liberal here about the dog food thing, Bakers in my opinion is one of the worst out there.

Of course your dog loves it - because it contains sugar, unlike most other dog foods.  Over time, this is going to rot his teeth when consumed twice a day and crunched into them.

It also contains artificial colours to make it appealing not to the dog, but to the human buyer, artificial additives and preservatives like BHA and BHT which are banned in 5 countries for being carcinogenic.

It says things like "Cereals" or "Vegetable derivatives", without stating what those cereals or vegetables are, and the same for "meat and animal derivatives".

In my mind it's one of the worst dog foods out there.

If he is a fussy eater, have you tried a wet food like Nature Diet??   www.naturediet.net

This food also contains  ADDED salt that is far worse than any added  presearative   because its use is unregulated -Jo

I've just started feeding Willis, my Great Dane, on Bakers. Believe me, I am a real food snob and I have tried Burns, ND even Pedigree and none of them have put the weight on like Bakers. He was a very skinny dane too. Its ok to me as a food - but Willis is 4 - I probably wouldn't give it to a puppy at such an impressionable age - perhaps try Burns.
