Topic Dog Boards / Health / urinating when excited
- By emma_fyfe [gb] Date 01.02.06 22:56 UTC
My dobe bitch is 4 rs old and house trained but sometimes when she is excited to see us when we come home, she urinates all over the floor. We don't tell her off, as she doesn't seem to realise she is doing it.. Has anyone else had this problem? We have just lost my other dobe so she is always extremely excited to see us now. She has never done this before, it only started when we lost Leah.

Any ideas welcome!

Yes, my Yankee boy used to wee all over the carpet when allowed into the lounge with us, as he was so excited to be there. You're right not to tell her off, that will only worry her and make her more likely to wee to show submissive behaviour. She's probably just unsettled with the loss of your other dog, and is particularly excited to see you because she worried that you might disappear too, poor thing. With my boy we just had to persevere until coming into the lounge was commonplace enough not to make him so excited! Try to greet her somewhere easily moppable until she settles down again. :-)

Hi Emma, Yes, this is submissive behaviour.  When she does it, imagine her saying "Hello, please don't hurt me, look - I'm still a little puppy, I still wee all over the floor".  It's relatively unusual for a 4 yr old dog to do it - it's usually little puppies which wee in this way, but nothing to worry about.

I don't think it's uncommon. When my boy was a pup he used to do it - it has stopped now. When you get home don't fuss her at all, just make her go straight out into the garden. She'll probably wee - then make a fuss of her. She should quickly get used to it.
I had twin yorky boys years ago - one never did it the other always did !.

My GSD cross BC use to do the same thing when she was younger but grew out of it after a while. It was always when we had come in after being out though we never went out for long periods of time.I think the longest she was ever left was when we went to a school open evening and were gone for about an hour and a half.Any one would think we had left her for months. :D

Hi Emma

It can also be caused by a urine infection if it just seems to leak out of her especially when she stands up.  If she has a UTI this could also explain her grumble that you mentioned elsewhere recently as they can be very uncomfortable.

I had a bitch that only did it when she saw my son ;) He ended up coming in the back door so that she could go out into the garden to meet him. She always did it, no matter what we did. ;)
