- By weezie [gb] Date 01.02.06 15:13 UTC
just wanted to double check!! my pup came into season 3 weeks ago monday (just gone), im pretty sure she has stopped bleeding now so are we safe to resume walkies?!!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 01.02.06 15:13 UTC
Give her a good bath first and wash all her bedding (to remove any lingering smells) and you should be okay. :)
- By weezie [gb] Date 01.02.06 15:23 UTC
Should?! is it best to leave it for a few more days do you think? i need back up to give her a bath and hubby is at work!!!

My last litter was conceived after matings on the 18th and 20th days of the season, so a couple more days will do no harm, especially if you say you're "pretty sure she has stopped bleeding now" - are you certain that the discharge has stopped? Start washing that bedding, though! :D

well she is not obviously bleeding, but i guess i could never be 100%!! i will probably leave it until the weekend. i was not planning to let her off her lead, or take her anywhere busy, but i think i still may leave it until the weekend to be sure!! Thanks for your help!

sure she has stopped bleeding now

A bitch is most receptive when the bleeding has stopped so I would say NO its not safe

That would suggest that they could never go out again! ;) My bitches have always shown colour right the way through their seasons, but the bleeding stops at the end.

LOL...ok I worded it badly...meant to say that most bitches are redeptive when the discharge turns from red to a lighter colour. If the bitch has only just stopped losing red coloured dicharge then it would not be wise to assume she is safe.

she hasnt bled for at around 5 days, when is it safe? sorry, she has had one season, but that was 7 months ago and i have a very short term memory!!

I would wait a few more days yet.  I don't take mine out for 4 weeks, but there again my breed have been mated on days 18 and 21!

is it normal not to walk a bitch for 4 weeks when she is in season i ask because i always walk mine during seasons. ( i keep them on the lead and only walk where i no there wont be other dogs)

I have a german shepherd of 7 months old who came into season on the 30th of January. We were told by my vet to wait 28 days before we are 100% safe to take her out etc. so I am going with this. After the bleeding I was told there is a discharge stage which shows they are still in season. I am a TOTAL novive owner, and so I don't proport to know anything about this other than what mmy vet told me, but both my vet and my girl's breeder have said 28 days.

That said, will I need to bath my girl once the 28 days is over to get rid of any mess/smell. I must admit since she came into season she has become very, very affectionate with us as I think she doesn't know what is happening, and she isn't the best at cleaning herself bless her..!

i was never told not to walk her so i always have. my vet said it was not fair to keep her cooped up for that long.
- By weezie [gb] Date 01.02.06 16:53 UTC
i think you can walk them, but you need to be 100% sure you wont come across a dog not on its lead. mine as been walked round the roads twice during this season as we had people viewing our house and a bitch in season isnt the best sellng too!!! too be honest even though mine is a large, lively breed she is quite happy curled up asleep during her season, and not being walked!!

I just would never take the risk.  If there was a dog loose and he smelt your bitch, he doesn't have to be that close to, I just wouldn't want to risk what could happen to not only my dog but also to me if I tried to stop a males advances :d

This is just my opinion but I'd much rather have them in the house and my garden for 4 weeks than take the risk.

ditto :)

If there isn't a problem of latchkey dogs then there is absolutely no reason not to road walk in season bitches, I have always done so, and crossed the road if I ahve seen soemone walking a dog towards me.  If the owner wnats to stop and chat I tell them I have an in season bitch.

How does her vulva look?  has it closed up tight and returned to normal size, texture and colour?  If so then I would say her season is over.

If not give it up to four weeks from the first day of her season.

It should be OK to take her out on lead where you are unlikely to meet off lead dogs.
