Hi, my mini dachshund , Tyko, is going to be speyed in a couple of weeks time. i wondered if she will have to wear one of those bucket collars  ( i hope you know what i mean !!) , as i havnt seen a dog wearing one for years.

I had a bitch spayed last summer, and I was provided with an Elizabethan Collar. However she didn't bother the stitches at all, so I didn't ever make her wear the collar.

I always think the booster collars cause the dog more distress than anything else.  Provided they are not bothering the stitches then I don't think a booster collar is needed.  We didn;t use one on our bitch when she was speyed.

she will only need one if she takes an interest in the incision and stitches.

I always call them lamp shades, see what she's like after the op.

oh and theyre called buster collars ;)

Or Elizabethan Collars :)

when my dog had her op the vets gave me a coller only put it on her at night time as i couldnt watch her through the night

My JRT had to wear one constantly when he was castrated as the second it was off he was after his stitches.
My big girl though when she was spayed she only wore one when I went out in case she tried to nibble them when alone.  She was good when I was home.

thanks for info everyone much appreciated The vet has also suggested that she has a booster injection on the same day as she has her op, wouldnt that be a bit much ?

We were given one of those awful collars for Kayla when she was spayed and she was so stressed when she had it on that we didn't bother. She left her wound well alone anyway, like she knew she was meant to!

No way would I have a booster the same day as a big op, a dog should be in full health for that, which IMO means after they have recovered :)

When my old lady was speyed (about 8 yrs ago) the vet did a wonderful job and gave her dissolvable stitches that were hidden under her skin. So no need for the collar and no stitches for her to bite at! The wound healed quickly too and no need to get the stiches removed.

I found the Mooncollar to be an excellent alternative to the Elizabethan collars, I'll put a link below so you can click on and see for yourself (theres a photo)
         The problem I had was that my Siberian discouvered the Elizabethan collar made an excellent shovel to assist him in his excavation work in my garden and paddock :rolleyes: he would merrily bound back into the kitchen with it full of soil!! there was also the total lack of spacial awareness!
     Cant recommend the Mooncollar highly enough, only draw back is the expense, but I sold mine on easily enough in my breed club ( theres ebay etc)
