My cav puppy Flynn who is 5 months old has an upset tummy again.  He seems to be fine for weeks and then goes out and eats all sorts of nasty things ie horse poo and goose poo when on his walks.

This morning his poo seems to have several white stringy bits in it.  He is not due to be wormed again for another two weeks.  Can we worm him again now or can anyone suggest anything else?

He is straining a lot when he does poo so there is also a little blood in it.  I am thinking of starving him for the day.  Do you think that would be alright?  He normally eats Eukanuba puppy food.

I would definitely worm him again now.  What wormer are you using?  Drontal + is the most effective wormer which kills the broadest range of worms.  If you are using another wormer, or a wormer from a pet shop, it is very possible that it hasn't worked and you should get hold of some Drontal +.  You can't buy Drontal in petshops - only from the vet or online: http://www.petvetcare.co.uk/acatalog/Drontal_Wormers.html

Thanks for that.  We got the wormer from the vet but it wasn't Drontal + .  Can't remember what it was but will go to the vet and ask for more today.

Thank you

Lots of vets now use Milbemax..just as effective as Drontal+ only in a smaller tablet so useful for big dogs(1 tablet is enough for a 25kg dog and the tablet is teeny) :)

Yes that is what we were given.  I could not remember the name.

Sorry, yes Milbemax is good too - but would give him another dose of it if you saw white strands in there...

It would do no harm to try Drontal either.

Been to the vet and he suggested starving him for 24 hours and has given him some more Milbemax so hopefully he will be better soon.

I would change his food - Eukanuba is not very good. :(

Also when it does come to worming time a good idea is to let the vet test for worms first. Why would you put chemicals into your dog when it's not needed? A lot of people now test first. :)

Also when the tummy is upset it's a good idea to give it a rest for a few days, which simply means giving your dog a bland diet of boiled chicken & rice.

Be very careful of letting your dog eat horse manure - if the horse has recently been wormed itself it could make your dog very, very ill.

Thanks for everyones replies.  He definately had worms as I could see them so he should be ok now.

How do you stop them eating dog poo.  I have tried the shaking box trick, squeaky toy to distract, treats etc etc but nothing seems to stop him.

Was going to change his food for something else but when I spoke to the vet he said that Eukanuba was fine.  I was looking at changing to Naturediet (if I can find some) would that be better?

I appreciate everyones help thanks.

If you have actually witnessed worms in the faeces, it is advised to give another dose of the wormer in 5-7 days time.  Just to make sure they're all really gone.

Personally, I would also use another wormer, because different wormers act most effectively against different worms, and just to make sure I had all bases covered, I'd use another wormer.  (Drontal +)

Hi.

I've just changed my Cav pup back to Naturediet and I think its a fab. Harvey was on JWB but his skin was very dry and he'd gone off it. One thing with ND - be careful with the feeding guidelines as they are very generous. Harvey weighs 5kg and he eats 3/4 of a pack per day, he loves it and poo's are perfect:cool: Only gripe I have is that his ears dip in the dish and STINK!! I've now made him a little headband out of a sock which is perfect at holding his ears back during feeding time!
