Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Smelly windy puppy!!
- By Cocopops [in] Date 29.01.06 19:50 UTC
Hi,

Can someone offer some help to solve my unpleasant problem with wind - all evening, every evening!

He is nearly 4 months, is on 3 meals a day of Pedigree Complete Puppy with a very small amount of Puppy pouch and I add approx 3 tbsps of water to the meal (not sure if I still should do this?). I appreciate it could be the food but am just thinking i could go on forever trying different foods. I have heard of charcoal biscuits - is this something i would need to add to every meal?

Any advice much appreciated.

Evening

through experience, i would most definitly say its the food, have tried this myself in the past and have had nothing but smelly, runny poo little puppies  dont know wat everyone elses views are but over the past couple of years have brought up n e puppies i have acquired(regularly foster) all on Nature Diet puppy..never had n e problems with this..feed all my adult dogs on a mix of tripe and james well beloved, puppies also get JWB biscuits too.
Hope this is of some help..maybe someone else has a better product to recommend, no doubt if they do , they will be kind enough to inform u..very friendly on here:cool:

It's known in the dog world as "Pedigree Chum Bum" :D

Hi, personally I wouldn't feed any dogs of mine on Pedigree chum!!! Even when I've been given that stuff from a win, I give it to the local PDSA!! Change him gradually onto a quality food like Nutro, Autarky, James wellbeloved or Nature diet. I'm sure others here have their reccomendations and favourites. All the best, Dawn

Hello

I feed my pup on Naturediet and she still makes bad smells esp. in the evening.  Although not every evening.  I can't figure out why or why sometimes not.  All the treats she gets are without pres./add. either.  Poop is sometimes soft sometimes firm

Could it be possible that your feeding too much? The feeding guidelines on Nature Diet are VERY generous! When my pup was 12 weeks old, I tried Nature Diet and overfed.......he had terrible wind and terrible runs. I've heard people on here say that they only feed around 1/2 od ND's recommended daily amount (although every dog will differ) Just a thought.

You didn't say what breed your pup is - some are renound for unpleasant odours from the back end  haha  Is the food what the breeder had weaned him onto?  Why not try cutting out the wet food and just adding a bit of water to the dry (1-2 tbsp) to moisten it and see how he goes from there.  There's no need to add the pouched food anyway as the dry is a "complete food" so he won't be getting any less nutrients etc :)  If this doesn't work then wean him (very gradullay over a period of 2 weeks) onto another puppy complete food - James Wellbeloved is very tiny pieces which nearly choked our sheltie so try one with bigger kibbles :)

Hi,

Have just been chatting to another dog walker and mentionned that his poo is runny too to go with the wind (as you do!) and she took hers to the vet and he said often it is runny if he is overfed so goes along with your post. I give him 3 full handfulls a day of complete dry and he was having a third of a tin, he always ate it all and seemed about right weight but he has been starting to leave some now.
He is a Golden Retriever, a smelly one :0)

Yeah overfeeding can upset their tums.  When you say runny does it still have some form to it and is it pick-up-able (diarrhoea is total slop to put it bluntly)?  I ask cos if it doesn't have form then it would be best to take him to the vets as he could have a bug.

Are you giving him the recommended amount for his breed/weight?  Some dogs need more and some need less so just alter it to suit.  IME Goldies are quite greedy so don't be taken in by the 'puppy eyes' - if he's growing, is healthy, is a good weight and has firm poo's then he's on the right amount despite what he thinks ;)

As I suggested in a previous post try cutting out the tinned food completely and just moisten the dry with a little boiled water (leave it to cool for a coupla mins after you've mixed it in the food before you give it to him) and see how he goes over the next few days :)

For a start change the food - Pedigree is one of the lower grades of dog food out there. There is not much choice in the UK of decent dog food, but some that are good are - James Welbeloved (which is high on the medium grade), then there is Burns (order online), Solid Gold (order online), which is one of the best brands of food. Naturediet is very good & you can get it from a pet store. Avoid all supermarket food, as none of it is any good.

Anyway, adding 1tsp of non-fat plain yogurt to each meal helps reduce gas levels. :)

If at any time a dog has gas that is very bad & nothing is working, then it is always time to look at changing their food, as their tummies are upset.

Hope this helps.

I totally agree that there are foods out there which, ingredient wise are not great (those with a negative reputation - atleast with people 'in the know')  and that there are foods which are very good!  However, what suits one dog is not always what people class as 'the best foods', therefore, to say "For a start change the food - Pedigree is one of the lower grades of dog food out there." IMO is improper when other avenues haven't been explored (i.e. cutting down amounts cos of over feeding, omitting the tinned food etc, etc).  Surely changing food is a last measure if the dog does well on it normally?

i used to have awful trouble with all 3 of my dogs digestive systems, my lab used to get sickness and diareoh all the time, my cocker constantly had the runs and problems with his anal glands, and my american cocker always had the runs too.  This was until i changed their diet to chappie meat and chappie complete, and i find this the best food for my dogs and have reccommended it to many people. it might not be the most expensive food (in fact i think its one of the cheapest), and it doesnt have the most flashy name, but i swear by it and i havent had any trips to the vets for upset stomachs and my cockers anal glands are loads better.  Its also brilliant for dogs that need to loose weight!

I remember the problem well with our Sheltie, he had a terrible stomach, but it improved dramatically after we changed to Chappie
