My bitch is pregnant and nearly due. I was told to give her egg custard made with cows milk for calcium by a breeder. I was always lead to believe you shouldn't give dogs cows milk ???
Am I ok giving her egg custard, made from a packet mix with cows milk ?? (without the pastry base!!)

I wouldn't use a packet mix - just give her the egg, with milk if you like. Extra calcium is safer given after whelping, rather than before.

Why not just give her scrambled eggs instead of going to the effort of making custard. It's basically the same thing, milk and eggs. Remeber that whatever you do, don't add salt or sugar. You could also give her natural live yogurt which seems to be tolerated by some dogs better than ordinary cows milk. Mind you, I know one breeder who swears that it's dangerous as it contains 'bacteria', but several more that swear by it.
You could also give your girl Welpi or other bitch milk substitutes mixed in with her dinner. Just don't overdo any of them.

The milk will be 'cooked' so it will be fine. Our new puppies litter was brought up on egg custard (egg and milk) as one of the meals.
I was told many years ago by a breeder to make 'egg custard', but what she meant was to whisk an egg, add more milk than for scrambling and cook to a consistency of custard. I rear all my puppies with egg custard added to their meals and they do very well, no problems at all. as do my bitches AFTER whelping, once daily. I do use goats milk and not cows.
