Thinking off getting part of my garden decked (outside conservatory)  Heard from some neighbours that they have had rediculous prices especially when they see our types of houses they bump the price up.  They think because you have a large new built house you have loads of excess cash etc.  I was just wondering if anyone had decking done by a company or had a rough idea of costs etc. Obviously sizes etc differ but was wondering if there was a rough pricing idea ie £30 per foot etc? before we start getting prices from builders...i want to be prepared to haggle lol

Don't do it unless you want it, and want to live with it. ;) Like laminate flooring, it's now considered dated, and actually reduces the value of a house ...

And takes alot of work.
If your dogs like weeing or poohing on that part/think they might. i would not as the wee will permiate the wood and make it smell.
If you put a plank of wood dowbn where the tiolet and see what that smells like after a week you will get the picture :D
You have to treat it EVERY year, scrub it down  and treat it with outside wood treatment. otherwise it would not be worth the money as wood deterioate very quickly. The wood would not rot for a good few years but the decking would look green and old within 2 years if not treated at least once a year.
I do not know how much it costs as we have never got into it. I give someone elses number to do it as we thought it would be a fad,and it is :) less and less people are asking for it now.

I watched a programme about decking recently - they said (as JG has) that the fad is over and that it can become VERY dangerous if it isn't regularly cleaned, as you describe, Lea :)

JG I disagree on that one as it all depends on how good the quality is and how you design it ;)

He does it as a side line and so doesn't charge over the odds.

We have decking outside our conservatory, my OH did it as he is a builder, he laid it at an angle, rather than straight across and it looks really nice (even if i do say so myself) i do warn you that when it is wet it can be very slippery we have had it about three years now, he got it from Howdens however i do believe that they have now stopped selling it, which is a shame because at the time it was quite cheap, and good quality (OH is very fussy) it was a pound a meter and it came in four meter lengths.
