Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Decision made and I'm devastated... (locked)
- By learnertrainer [gb] Date 30.01.06 00:51 UTC
I've posted a couple of times in the last few weeks asking for advice re my rescue dog and thought I'd update you on what's happening now.

I spoke to the lady who did our home check etc last week - she said she had some books on dog behaviour that she'd read and try to give some advice.  She then emailed me and said that there had been some dogs on "it's me or the dog" that had had similar problems and I should follow the advice given in the programme, and also to post on their forum and ask for advice from one of their volunteers who is a behaviourist.  I posted asking for help yesterday.  Today, I find my post has been deleted and a message posted saying we shouldn't expect help from the lady concerned, but should ask for help from the person in our area who arranged the rehoming!

In the last few days, Freddie has gone for several people (and me tonight - thank god he was muzzled) and is getting worse if anything.  So, I've decided to phone the rescue people tomorrow and ask them to take him back.  We are gutted, as we all love him, but just cannot cope anymore.  I feel very let down by the society.  We've spent a small fortune on him trying to sort him out and they appear to not be interested now they know he's got problems.

Sorry for the rambly post, but I'm feeling very emotional.  Thank you for your advice, I'm very very sad that it hasn't worked out for us and even more so that I will probably never consider a rescue dog again after this.

Regards to you all

I feel sorry for you for what you have been through lately, especially when you have tried to get the help you so obviously needed,Re-homing a dog is never easy but sending it back to the rescue must be even harder, just remember youhavent failed, you tried and it was beyond you, some dogs do need expert help and guidence. I have not been following your previous posts so please forgive me if i have offended you. I just read your post and felt a sense of your sadness and frustration. Some dogs are sent to try us and try us they might. The biteing episode you mentioned would have been the last straw for just about everybody. You see yourself as trying to help this dog and he turns on you. I understand where you are at as i had more or less the same dilema quite a few years back. Good luck to you and dont get too dis-heartened about going down the rescue route at a later date, give yourself time to get over this. You never know there may well be a lovely pooch out there with your name on sometime in the future. We now have the most adorable ckcs.I was battered emotionally after my disaster with a rescue dog,it took alongtime for me to find my confidence again about owning another dog but i did it and now i look back and think "well, that was a learning curve" and i now feel very lucky to be able to offer my pooch the safest and most loving home she deserves. You will feel better but it takes time and alot of work. best wishes to you.

learnertrainer, you have been grossly mislead as to what so called 'positive training' means, no inflexible approach to training any dog and its owner, except quiet dogs, which yours is not, should be classed as proffesional and APDT has no flexibility of any kind, pro buisnes people yes, pro dog trainers no the results you have are typical of the crisis caused by this left handed glove being fitted on to right handed people/dogs is typical.
I have PMd you a real proffesional trainers site, I suggest you at least call him and let him asses you and your dog for a flexible dog and owner training aproach, check your PM I will send it now.

Hi Val,

I'm really sorry that you haven't had the support that you should have through the rescue society :(   I don't know the background with Freddie so my apologies if I've misinterpreted anything but at the end of the day perhaps even the most experienced owner could not overcome his problems.

While returning him is obviously very distressing for you, keeping him is hardly a pleasure - you are not able to live a normal family life with your pet if he is a danger to those in his own household and it's no life for him being permanently under suspicion.   IMO you're doing exactly the right thing by returning him - for Freddie and your family.  You will get all the support you need on here - we all realise that not every dog can be rehabilitated and that sometimes heartbreaking decisions have to be made.

Try and focus on the fact that this is a positive outcome rather than a negative one - easy said I know - but don't beat yourself up about it.

very best wishes, Teri x

Well said Teri.

Just a thought as well, if the person you spoke to tried to give help out of books they may have been about pack theory, which would not solve a fear  or possible aggression problem :) Also, if it was advised that you follow the ideas on "It's me or the Dog" and if you did so, it may have made the problem worse - exactly the concern many of us have who watch the programme and worry that peeps will apply exactly that method to  their dog (which would be a natural thing to do) :)

Hope you don't mind me pointing this out, as plenty of people use the board and it can help others to see more of the picture :)

Best wishes
Lindsay

thank you all for your kind words.  I feel like I've let Freddie down in a terrible way, but I know it's the right thing to do for him to get some proper help.

As soon as the rescue woman advised me to follow tips from that programme, I knew she'd be no help whatsoever! There is no way I'd put poor Freddie through some of the things she puts those dogs through.

Thanks again

Val

Come people are no longer as gullible as they might have been a couple of years ago. Its getting all over the web that people here are on commisions for referrals and anyone with any sense knows no one sits at a computer all day everyday generating around £2000 of business for other people year in year out. Lindsay & Tohme are promoting APBC and APBC on many sites all day every day for years.
No one spends all day every day year in year out at a PC making money for other people unless they are on the take, check out the times and dates on just a fraction of Lindsay's posts below all refrerals and its every day, all day long for years at £100 per behaviourist visit, shes generating hundreds of thousands of £s of buisness PA, for free!!!.:confused::confused::confused: - I mean come on people are not stupid even if there are attempts to treat us that way.

Absolute rubbish - totally agree Brainless.

I suppose that if I recommended a  particular handcream to people then I would obviously be getting a cut of their profits too.

(Sorry for the rubbish example but you know what I mean) ;-)
