Our puppy is now 12 weeks old, he is biting more than ever, mouthing we coped with and followed advice as offered by the Dunbar link. It seems this last few days he is more demanding of our attention than ever, jumping to nip at whatever is available. I felt all was okay and we were managing but I am not so sure that we are not missing something in our reactions to it. I feel its not nasty but demanding attention, he is a terrier, I dont know what I should expect but just feel its a matter of his being a terrier?

Have now (sorry should have looked first) searched past posts. They have put my mind at rest as it appears we must stand firm and it will pass...........given time and patience.

It will pass, honestly! Although your patience will probably be well and truly tried! We are very nearly out of it (another terrier!) and although he forgets himself and mouths occasionally, the teeth do not close! It used to be that every second sentence seemed to be "no biting!" but very brief time-outs are working wonders on the occasions when good manners seem to have got forgotten.

Thank you so much for that, the theory is well and good but it really is so trying....
The time outs are what we are on at the moment, he seems to be rather strong minded. But we all love him so much he Will be okay. Keep thinking positive thoughts eh?
Thanks again the reassurance is very welcome.

Thanks for the link, but it is the Dunbar one I mentioned in the initial post. That is we are working with it, but still getting a bit tested!

This is fairly normal behaviour which is technically known as an 'extinction burst' - basically the dog has learnt the behaviour normally gets the result he wants, but when it suddenly ceases to get the result, the dog thinks 'more is better' and increases the effort to get the same reward.  We can use this same behaviour 'blip' when training to encourage the dog to work harder, but so often we forget to warn owners it can occur when we're trying to stop a behaviour as well as encourage one.

Thank you for that, I appreciate all of you who respond.
