my dog caught a rabbit today who had miximitosis and i am sure i have heard that they can't catch anything from the rabbit but was wondering if someone could put my mind at rest.

we live quite rural and have lots of rabbits everywhere and they seem very easy to catch, my dogs have eaten lots, my cats also bring them home and no side effects!

wish the rabbits would learn to stay away as i hate to see them get caught but i have tried and tried but every morning there they all are in our paddocks even though we have stock fenced every inch!

so would not worry if i was you

Our old lab Gemma (one before Purdey) had the disgusting habit of catching rabbits, bringing them back into the garden and CRUNCHING the head in front of sqeamish visitors

Didn't matter whether they had myxie or not .....she continued catching them until she was nearly 16 .......

Should have added - most definitely keep up with the worming - when you see the worms in a rabbit's intestine

They can of course pick up worms and also Rabbit mite (walking Dandruff) so just make sure to keep the worming and fleaing up to date.  Seems yours are self BARFers :D

One of my SWD puppies used to catch rabbits and did get some kind of virus from one or so the vet thought.  He was very ill for a number of week.  I do think that you have to be careful.  It's certainly made me think!

i did try the barf diet on them for a while but whilst being at school it got a bit much so had to go back to kibble.

Lokis mum: she in fact went straight for the head as well (won't have to brush her teeth today i suppose is one good thing)

it takes me ages to get her away - usually me waiting until she has disminished the whole thing but this time some other dog came up and she let it have it!!!
thanks for the reasurence - i will keep an eye on her anyway.
did actually see a flea or something so used capstar straight away and also applied their frontline a couple of days early.
thanks again

A friend of mine checked this out with our vet a little while ago as she has a deerhound that catches rabbits. He assured her the dog couldn't catch anything (apart from the rabbit;P)
