We had a new poodle puppy on 1st January, as companion to our 8 year old poodle. The puppy was not feeding well and after a few days, started passing mucousy yellow diarrhea and refusing to eat.  Strangely on the day that we took a fecal sample to the vet( 11th Jan ) she started to recover and seems fine now. However on 19th we were told that she has giardia and on the same day our older dog vomited and started with diarrhea. Our vet prescribed a 2 day dose of panacur for both dogs and we have tried to keep them apart to avoid the puppy getting ill again. The whole situation is horrible and really getting to me. Today the older dog has been violently sick again deapite the Panacur. Does anyone know when I can expect any improvement, or should I take her back again, as she seems really depressed and is still not eating properly.

Have a look at this page

I'd definitely take both dogs back to the vet as the 2 days of panacur obviously has not eliminated the infection.

Have a look at this page, it contains a variation on the administration of Panacur.

well I've taken her back today and the vet has prescribed metronidazole( flagyl)  and taken a stool sample.
She had a good appetite this morning, but has just vomited all her food back up, virtually undigested. She still has sloppy yellow stools, but clearly wants to eat  just can't seem to digest it. Its so heartbreaking to have a young puppy in the house and not be able to let them play together. I'm petrified that the puppy will get ill again. Has anyone out thare had similar problem with dog with persistent diarhhoea and occasional sickness ?

I can sympathise!!!  My lab puppy had a Giardia infection, seemingly from day 1 (although none of her littermates, mum, or other dogs of the breeder have had any problems).  No idea where it came from.  She had 2  5 day courses of panacur, then metronidazole (I think - the vet got it from a people chemist anyway) and she recovered so quickly after the last lot of medicine!!  She lost a lot of weight over this time, as it was a while before the vet even diagnosed Giardia.  Now she's doing really well, definitely caught up in size and has been 100% poo-wise ever since. Hope you get things sorted!!

Thanks Claire, its comforting to know that not all dogs clear up on the first course of treatment. Was you dog being sick as well, as Charley has been sick 3 times in the last 2 days? What really worries me is that years ago I lost a 2year old dog to Parvo and I keep thinking that this might be parvo, not Giardia.

Amber wasn't sick, but was really really poorly out of the other end.  She didn't put on weight for the first 8 weeks that I had her .  I did read that sickness is fairly common with it though, if you google it you'll find out lots about it in humans and animals.  Our vet wasn't suprised it didn't clear up straight away, when it was diagnosed he said it could take several courses of treatment.  If you're worried about parvo though, maybe mention it to the vet?  It wouldn't hurt to be on the safe side.  But I'd have thought vets are fairly clued up on parvo at the mo, and if they had reason to suspect it they'd have tested straight away.  In fact - was it not tested for in the original poo test?  I know they don't just look for Giardia, but a whole host of things - maybe parvo too?

We had test results back last night and she tested negative for giardia, parvo and campylbacter, so now the vet thinks it might be a corona virus?  Anyway all seems a horrble coincidence that we have a new puppy for 3 weeks tested positive for giardia and then our older dog gets the same symptoms and yet appears to have something else. so we have had another change of tablets to treat a possible bacterial infection. chalrey is being sick a lot more and had an anti vomiting jab last night, but was still sick 2 hours later - looked like everything she had eaten during the day. This has been going on for over 2 weeks and its so upsetting. of course I'm so worried now that the pup will get this new infection, whetever it is.

Next time I'm having a goldfiah !

Hi B/R, sorry to hear your pups not well :(

Have you told your vet she vomited after the injection & what has he given you for her, how old is pup & is it pup or older dog still being ill or both?
- By bedruthen Date 27.01.06 12:21 UTC
the pup was ill first and poo positive for giradia. She recovered quickly with antibiotic, then older dog became ill about a week later. She was treated for suspected giardia with panacur and then flagyl. But then sample taken and results yesterday negative for giardia, campylbactor and parvo. Vet now suspects a corona virus ?  This all seems too much of a coincidence and now the worry is that the pup will catch this virus from older dog. I am keeping them apart, but as the pup is still indoors ( only 10 weeks old) it is hard.

Hiya, from what I`ve read on corona it only affects very young pups, under 6/8wks I think  But treatment is the same for most of these type of gastro diseases, fluids a/b`s etc.

What are you/have been feeding your older dog & have you told vet she`s still unwell? I think you should, you`ll need to watch she doesn`t get dehydrated. You could add some honey to her drinking water, is she drinking & keeping it down?

At the moment she is on an antibiotic - Ronaxan and she is having scrambled egg for breakfast, no milk then pasta and chicken regularly through the day. I am feeding her a tablespoon at a time about every 2 hours to try not to overload her system. Shehasn't lost her appetite, but by evening she is usually sick again and the whole lot comes back undigested.
