Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / raw feeding.

hello all,

are there any folks who feed raw out there willing to give some advice??? we a have a working siberian who is having problems with his digestive tract and is refusing to eat kibble. before anyone says, he is genuinly not well and is not having us on about not eating kibble.

i am after some info about how much to feed and what. (we feed twice a day) he has not to get a lot of beef as the vet reckons this will irritate his gut more at the moment.  he usually weighs around 22 -23 kg and is working hard.  i want to make sure he is getting a balanced diet so i guess what i'm after is some sort of diet sheet.  also any books that anyone can recomend would be great.

please feel free to pm me if you dont want to give advice over the board.  i have been thinking about raw feeding all our dogs for a while now, and if the wee man does well on it i may switch over completely.

thanks in advance

If you search for BARF on Amazon you'll find quite a few books on the subject.

I would highly recommend Natural Nutrition for Cats & Dogs by Kymythy Schultze. It is very easy to read and explains things very well. It also suggests a meal plan etc. Dr Ian Billinghurst's books are generally good too although I found Give Your Dog a Bone a bit difficult to read but the information is all there.

I am relatively new to raw feeding too but I am happy with how my dogs are doing on it so far. There are some very experienced BARFers on here who will hopefully be able to advise you further :)

hello i feed on raw meat and my pup loves it seems to fill him if he dosnt eat his kibble.I was feeding beta pup but ive changed to james wellbeloved as ive been told by a few people that its the best and its good for the guts! I feed tripe mostly as i have a bulldog and im trying to get weight on him but there is lots of diff ones i like the white fish or chicken but there is lamb beef turkey i go to pets at home and its in the freezers.I give two hand fulls of and a pound of tripe a day but my pup is on 3meals aday so you would have to work out what your dog needed hope this helps

Briefly, feed your adult dog around 2 - 3% of its bodyweight per day.

Divide food into two meals.

50 - 60% of the meals should be raw meaty bones, with the rest being made up of muscle meat, offal, fish, eggs, with small amounts of fruit and veg.

Kmythy Schulze book is excellent and a great resource.

I was new to raw feeding back in April and found the advice from this site great. I started off with 60% meaty bones (chicken wings, pigs trotters or oxtail) but found that my dog was constipated. I reduced to 50% but still very hard so increased her veggie mix and this did the trick. Veg that grows above ground loosen bowels, veg that grow below ground firm up. All veg can be used with the exeption of onions. She was not too keen on her veg at first but mixed with some yoghurt and mixed in with minced meat, liver or tripe for breaky and it goes down a treat. My dog used to be very poorly with numerous illnesses, we were at the vets almost every week, since feeding BARF we have not been to the vets once. Go for it.

thank you every one for your replies.  the barf uk site was very good.  i'm just worried he wont get everything he needs cause i'll mess it up!  i suppose we put so much trust in kibble dog food to be doing that for us.

anyway thanks again for the help.

Hi

The Landwoods site is really good and there prices look pretty good to. Problem is they dont deliver to Scotland.

Anyone know of a company that will

Wendy

I dont but i know there are a few people in scotland who have the same problem, if landywood could collate all the "scotland" locations and deliver to a central point?? or this is an opening in the market!
- By Isabel Date 27.01.06 16:11 UTC
Why not try to pursue the chain from the other direction by phoning up the nearest abbotoir and asking if any of their produce is going to local pet feed companies and if so a contact number for them?
- By hairypooch Date 27.01.06 21:47 UTC
I had this problem Wendy when I moved up here from Kent.

I now use Redcastles, if you PM me I can give you their details.

They are very good, have a good selection and they go out of their way to be helpful.

The only criticism I had was that they are somewhat more expensive than my previous suppliers in the South. Not the end of the world though as I also have a wonderful Butcher :)

hairypooch wwhat area do redcastle cover do they cover the north west cheers dawn
- By hairypooch Date 02.02.06 12:31 UTC
Hi N/H

Redcastles only cover a fairly small area of Central Scotland at present. Unfortunately there is very little choice around my neck of the woods.

Landywoods don't cover my area at all.
- By ShaynLola Date 02.02.06 21:26 UTC
Snap HP :( I can't find a BARF supplier that delivers to my area either. Perhaps we should form a pressure group or something to stop this terrible discrimination against BARFers in outlying areas :D :D
- By hairypooch Date 03.02.06 10:46 UTC
We'll start it immediately and call it D.A.B :D :D :D.....how imaginative of me..NOT
- By dharmadoodle [gb] Date 01.02.06 10:31 UTC
Try Landywoods they are very good. :)
