Hi guys help needed please, alfie was on autarky, we have tried beta, pets at home, JBL but nothing suits, he has latley had green runny poos and not had a solid one since we have been trying autarky. any way was at the vets last week for his rabies jab (on the count down we move to the caneries in 8months!!) and mentioned this and that I was thinking of natures diet next and he said to put him on chappie and a normal cheap mixer as we have prpblems with blocked anal glands and this should solve both!!  We tried chappie tinned (oh my god hate the stuff and what a load of messing around, love just to pour it out and put it down!!) and it seemed to work, well its only been a few days but things are definatly more soild and a better colour.  Do not want to stick to tinned chappie, does any one use the complete or do you think that the natures is simalar as this is a basic diet for sensitive dogs.

if he was good on autarky why change just out of interest. i have never fed it my self but have heard it is a very good food.
was there some reason that you decieded to stop using it?

My vet told me to use the tinned variety years ago on a young GSD with a digestive problem - I was horrified but it seemed to help. I have used the dried on two other dogs since with good results. Once they're settled on it I do introduce other foods, fresh veg, rice, pasta, meat & fish and they seem to love it. For me the shiney coats, bright eyes, firm stools etc have put my mind at rest. Although I give the extra foods, the bulk has been the dried chappie so I'm fairly happy with it. I've tried several other brands including Burns but have been most pleased all round with chappie dried - cost was not a factor in the choice. Some say it's not a good food but I can only go by experience.

Hi, sorry if I confused you but since hes been on Autarky he has had a bad tummy and red feet so hes not doing to well on it,  think he falls in to the sensitive dog catagory!!  Thank you for all of your replies, will keep him on the chappie for a while the try the natures diet.

No, Chappie is a complete food.

A bitch I have bred has IBS (the Vets think after so many tests they really don't knwo) and is on tinned chappie and this is the only way she doesn't get severe colic.

Someone else I know with a bitch that was nearly at the PTS stage with colitis is on 3/4 tin of Chappie a day (20kg Aadult dog of 11 years).

May seem cheap and nasty but dogs do well on it when they have digsestive problems.

It is fish based and not sure which cereal.

If your dog had trouble with Asutarky then I suspect it whould not have any food with Maize/Corn in, as that is the main grain in it along with Rice.  It is most often the grain in a food that causes a sensitivity being as dogs are not naturally cereal eaters.

There are a few fish based foods that dogs do well on.  I can recommend Arden Grange Classic recipe, though I would check the website to make sure there is no maize.

Another good one is the Wafcol Hypoalrgenic Fish one that I think has Potatoe as the Carbohydrate, know several people who praise it,a dn my dogs always did well on Wafcol, though it is a bit low in fat for ideal coat for my Elkhounds.

Vets have been recommending Chappie for years for dogs with digestive orders - it works! Hope I never need to use it though, LOL, the smell makes me want to throw up.

LOL - the smell   This thread has reminded me to buy in a few spare cans - it's certainly useful to have some on hand in case of tummy bugs etc and after 24 hour fasting many dogs can go straight onto it or, if necessary, start after a couple of days with a home made chicken/fish & rice diet.

That's a really good idea - could get some when Asda have it on special offer - never thought about having some "just in case" but it makes sense!

I used to feed CHAPPIE to a dog with multiple medical issues - the stuff is gross and you never get used to the smell!!!!
BUT it works and its far better than most compete dog foods - if I'm not mistaken or its not changed - the tinned stuff is complete unlike most tins ....

I do use it on occasion for upset tummies if I can't get to somewhere at an appropriate time to get Naturediet or similar - but oh, just the thought of having to feed it all the time and opening a can in the morning turns me green.

I have to feed it to one of mine due to medical issues and it does
work, was suggested by the vet instead of the expensive prescription diets
(which makes a refreshing change).
It's no where near as bad and smelly as cat food, I use the chicken and rice variety
they don't like the 'original' variety.

It seems I'm the only one not bothered by the smell! :o It's far milder than tinned cat food, for example.

Doesn't bother me either - my Vet recommended it to me nearly 30 yrs ago & I still use it when I've forgotten to defrost the tripe.

If you are moving in 8 months I'd find out what you can buy in the Canaries - it would be awful to find something that works for ALfie, but you an only buy it in the UK.
