Hi everyone, my golden retriever bitch has done a wee on the floor for the past 5 nights in a row (during middle of the night). When I took her to the vets to get a urine check (which came back fine) she did a wee on the vets reception floor. This behaviour is absolutely unheard of for her and she is let out at around 11pm for her last toilet, she is 20 months old and this is the first time she has ever had any accidents, we havent changed any of her routines. If she has ever needed to toilet in the night before she has woken us up and this has only happened maybe 3 times since we got her. Does anyone know what might be causing this? and also what's a good odour remover for the carpet as I have soaked the wee up with kitchen towel and scrubbed and sprayed with dettol but I can still faintly smell it. Thanks

The dettol you are using to clean up with may be encouraging her to wee in the same place. Dettol contains ammonia which, to dogs, smells like wee. Try cleaning the carpet with a solution of biological washing powder and warm water.

Could she be due to come into season?

Thanks for that! I will go and try it out now.

I would go back to giving her a treat when she toilets outside, and no treats when she goes inside.

Hi,

Is it possible something has happened at night that has scared or worried her and she has widdled as a result of this?  Once you've cleaned it up with something that will definitely get rid of any lingering odour - if it carries on it may be worth spending a night on the sofa and be near her so you can try and figure out what is going on.

Has she been spayed?  If not, it may be a sign of an up and coming season....

Hi thanks for your replies. Nothing has happened to scare her at night as far as I am aware. She has just had her season it finished a week and a half ago. Last night my other half was on call out and he didnt get to bed until 2am and that was when she had her last wee and she still had an accident, this time on the wood floor not the carpet, it has baffled me as she has never ever done this before. I will give her a treat as you say when she goes outside and see if this helps. Thanks again

If she has just finished her season be careful that she hasnt got a water infection.
My older girl had a water infection after her last season and she had to have a course of antibiotics (I noticed because she had a fishy smell) she wasnt necessarily peeing frequently but she did do a pee in the house which is unheard of as she is 2 and half.

I had her urine tested at the vets this week and it was all clear but I will keep a close eye on her. I havent noticed any unusual smells.
