Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / peanut butter. Is it dangerous for dogs?
- By jalle [gb] Date 22.01.06 18:16 UTC
Has anyone any knowledge of peanut butter being dangerous for dogs?. I just bought a large kong and the pet shop owner tried to sell me a tube of peanut flavoured  kong food, after a quick look at the ingredients i said no thanks i would rather stick to plain peanut butter, (their food was £5.99) she got very stroppy and stated "peanut butter is lethal for dogs" . I have always used peanut butter to hold the biscuit in and make it more fun. Now i'm worried. I would appreciate any feedback on this.

It's not something I'd use because it's very high in salt, but lots of people do.

Crikey, I hope it's not lethal or else I must have a ghost for a dog :D  I put peanut butter in her kong, not too often though because of it being high in calories

edited: yes, agree with JG it is high in salt too.  When I have given it, it has been only to smear on the inside of the rim of the kong, not to fill it up

it is not lethal but it is not particulaly (sp.) healthy for them either. i think the problem is the type of oil used in the penut butter but i have used it for my dogs and nothing has happend to them

waiting on them keeling over. thanks a lot for all replies. I also use hummus, the dogs love it.

I would use the salt free peanut butter, the dogs dont seem to mind :) Tahini is even better than PB,but beware  both are fattening

I use organic, salt free peanut butter. The place I get it from grinds it up right in front of you.
Some health food stores will have the machine to do it. No added salt or oil, just pure ground up peanuts.

If you have a coffee/nut grinder attachment for your food processor/blender, you can make it yourself at home... yummy and not just for dogs!

Yes, it never occured to me, I always buy the wholenut stuff anyway but fresh ground sounds even nicer, I suppose I want to use roasted nuts?
- By Phoebe [gb] Date 24.01.06 11:54 UTC
You can either do it with the fresh raw nuts or roast them in the oven first - I can't for the life of me remember the times and temperature, though! I think you can even roast them in a frying pan.

You sometimes see fresh roasted one in my supermarket I will look out for them or maybe have a go at roasting my own, thanks for the idea, good low GI food for us humans :)

I used to do that with my food processer, but my pup is terrified of the sound. Even if hes in the yard and hears it go off he howls and races to his crate crying. Poor little guy

I bought a giant Kong for my GD pup.  But she hates peanut butter (and I have a nut allergy so wore rubber gloves to handle it)!  What else can I put in her Kong?
- By CherylS Date 25.01.06 22:56 UTC
I've put a mixture of dog biscuits and cooked chicken in before. Squashed it all in really tight.

Kong actually make a filling.
Its usually found in pet stores around the toys and kongs.

Its liver flavour and my dog loves it
