I have 2 house rabbits and last night, when giving them a cuddle, I noticed that Snowball my 2 yr old female Lionhead had a sore bottom. I took her to the vet this morning and she has urine scald. She had to have her bottom cleaned under GA and has a course of anti biotics.......I'm feeling so guilty for not noticing sooner :0(    She's rather sleepy tonight and I'm a bit worried about her eating as a rabbit's gut stops working if the don't graze regularly, but at the same time I don't want to stress her out by shoving food under her nose - even parsley, her favourite isn't tempting her

Aww poor bunny..

Supreme recovery is a fantastic food for post operative rabbit recovery. It comes in a sachet that needs to be mixed with water to the consistancy you want which means with really collapsed bunnies it can be syringed. It is very true tat if a bunnys gut stops moving, chances are it wont restart.

If she is not eating within 24hrs of the anaesthetic....rush her back to your vets to be on the safe side. We are seeing a lot more rabbits now through the practice i work at with about 3 out of 20 consults being bunnies, and even though rabbit medicine is improving quickly the poor little mites can still go downhill very quickly.

Hope your little bunj gets better soon :)

Hi Sue,
She's much better now, happily munching lots of hay and she's had some carrot top greens. Her bottom is clean but pink and sore looking. I'm putting vasaline on twice a day as instructed. Struggling to get the baytril own her - been putting it in a little mashed banana but she's not too keen - normally loves banana! Thanks for your concern.

Great news you bun is better.
i lost 2 last year :( One died of a blockage in the gut. The other of fly strike, so my remaining rabbit is now a house rabbit. Just trying to find a mate for him (He is neutered and one of the rabbits that died was one he was paired with)
the rescue formula is great, I used it for him and gave it to him through a seringe when he was poorly in September last year along with a course of AB
Hope your bun improves quickly :)

I lost my last bunny last year and because we have such a high risk of mytsi wont be replacing him.  All mine were neutered and we had 10 of them at one point living outdoors in a big run.  Sadly we lost 3 even though they were vacinated to mysti.

Hope you bunny is feeling better and dont feel guilty even the most caring owners dont always notice.  Lets be honest a bunnys bottom is not something you would concentrate on for too long. :)

Do you mean 'mysti' or myxi as in myxomatosis?  I live in a rural location and had rabbits for many years who weren't vaccinated.  We also have gundogs and regularly have rabbits at home (use their skins for covering training dummies), and never ever had a problem with myxomatosis.

I live in the city and last year, we had a rise in myxi related deaths - I always have mine up to date with myxi and VHD vaccs. My two are spayed and neutered. We've just sold our house and the one were moving to is smaller.....although double in price:rolleyes:My bunnies will live outdoors then so the plan is, their huge 2 storey condo will be inside a children's playhouse/summerhouse with a run attached. I'm sure that they will be happier, they don't wander around the house much now that the pup's around so they will have far more space:cool:Snowball's far better now, she's just finished a nice bunny salad.
