Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Girl or boy?

We have a small/medium crossbreed 3 year old bitch - she's part terrier and part God knows.  She was a rescue dog a year ago and is just the sweetest, softest thing you could ever meet - wouldn't harm a fly.  She is also full of beans and loves playing with other dogs so we have decided to get a puppy.  We now have the opportunity to get a Sprollie puppy but can't decide whether we should pick a girl or a boy.  We have a slight preference for a girl....slightly smaller and it's all we've known so far, but some people have suggested to us that a boy would be better to prevent any female rivalry with our existing dog.  Can anyone advise please?

I have only ever had male dogs so cant comment on two females, but there are alot of members on here that have more than onle female and more than one male.  Good luck with whatever you decide:).

I have two females - one from a pup (now 2.5 yrs), one a rescue (8yrs) - and a male from a pup(2.5yrs), and I'd recommend a male.

Not that we have problems - the girls actually get on much better than the rescue gets on with my boy; but, the younger girl adores her so much that she will pester her until there's growling.  The younger girl and the lad get on fine as well, inseparable.

I think, if all else is equal, a boy would be best.  Not saying that getting a girl would lead to problems - they might get on fine and be best buddies, but if you just want that extra little bit of reassurance and to be doubly sure, then a boy would be best.

I would recommend a boy. :-)

Well now we don't know what to do!  We were set on a girl but it seems most of you think a boy would be the better option.  Does anyone have any knowledge/experience of Sprollies and know whether you would expect a) the size and b) the temperament to vary much between the sexes?

Being a F1 hybrid cross breed depends which parent the puppies take after & what the parents are like temp wise & size wise. One of the problems with X breeds

As MM said, Sprollies vary greatly. one of a litter may take after the dam, the other the sire.  I actually own a Sprollie who looks like a miniature Collie to all intents and purposes, with a slightly square nose and very long hair on her floppy ears.  She's still full of fun at 13 years of age, and will still chase my 6 year old ESS up the garden....  She's very very smart, and picks things up very quickly even now - both the good and the bad ;)

I've met two Sprollies and they were both different sizes and looked different too, so it is very difficult to judge, one thing for sure it will be an active pup and need lots of good exercise when it is an adult.

My male is friend to all my females (I have 4) and my females favour the companionship of my male to each other, although they all get along well, my male is their best friend, which is why I favour a male and a female together.

Also the female will be the boss of the household, if you have a male he will submit to the female (just as it should be!!:-D) and they should get along well as adults.

We've had a male and female together (shelties) and they got on great :)  Our female was spayed.  If you do get a male ensure one of them has an 'op' to ensure no risk of pregnancy :)
