HI

THIS IS MY FIRST FEMALE YORKIE,IF I GET HER SPAYED ABOUT SIX MONTHS AS I DO NOT WANT TO BREED HER DOES THAT MEAN SHE WILL NEVER HAVE A PERIOD AND WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT SPAYING SO EARLY?

I HAVE READ BOOKS ABOUT IT BUT THEY SAY DIFFERENT THINGS,SOME SAY LEAVE UNTIL LATER SOME SAY DO IT A.S.A.P

ALL ADVICE WELCOME:cool:

Once your female has been speyed she will never have a season again!  I am sure that you have read there maybe risks of incontinance with early speying, though later speying may run a risk of mammory cancers, so it is a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea, my personal preference is after the first season. Don't let the risks put you off speying, as not speying may cause Pyometra.

Dogs have been speyed for many years before and after seasons with no health issues and lived long healthy lives either way. It is down to personal preference and advice from your own vet, but I believe most vets would recommend after first season. :-)

I have had bitches that I have never had spayed, bitches that have been spayed at around 2 yrs and 3 spayed at 6 months.
The ones spayed early were no different afterwards or years on to the ones spayed late or to the ones never spayed, except I have lost 2 unspayed girls over the years to problems that would not have arose had they been spayed, but temprement, coat or any other wise if anything I would say the spayed ones were all calmer and definatly more placid.
My advice would be to get her spayed if you don't wish to breed at a later time.  Waiting, depending on the area you live in can mean confinement and restricted exercise during the season to try and stop unwanted attention from male dogs and maybe accidental mating.  Only to end up with restricted exercise again for 10 days when you do have her spayed.

What breeds have you owned, as I do wonder whether the effects of spaying and it's timing may be different dependant on breed or type.

I used to show and breed rough and smooth Collies until my husband was tragically killed, I have also had German Shepherds, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Jack Russells, and a doberman.
At the moment I have a Rottie x GSD and a Jack Russell.

I was told with my shepherd not to spay her too early as it could make her grow too big, which will put undue strain on her hips. She is already a very big girl at 6 months, and there are some signs she may come into season soon, as well as the fact that her mum and all her sisters came into season early. We have decided to spay her after she is a year old at some point. The vet also mentioned certain risks in terms of surgery on a bitch who hasn't had a season (i think a hemorridging risk was mentioned?) I don't know if this is standard or breed specific comments the vet gave though.

I,ve never had a bitch spayed except for one little crossbreed years and years ago she was done about four months after her first season as my vet at the time believed dogs should be allowed to fully develop internally before undergoing such a major procedure as an hysterectomy
I,ve never wanted my GSDs spayed but if I had done my thoughts would be the same.
Some vets do encourage dogs to be spayed before the first season but to me this is not an option. everyone has their own opinion and will do what they think best for the dog ( I HOPE )

My 6month old girl had her stiches out from spaying 2 weeks ago.  Didn't enjoy her having the op or keeping her calm afterwards, but now I am so glad its done and over.
