Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / feeding from a kong
- By kirsty s [gb] Date 19.01.06 16:25 UTC
Hi ive just bought my bulldog puppy a kong which i fill up with yummy food for when i want him to settle down ive only started it as a puppy trainer advised me to do so she feeds her dog its dinner in one i was just wondering if this is a none thing?

Its a good idea -- wouldnt work for me cos i feed chicken wings and they are kinda hard to fit in a kong.

The idea is your dog gets much more enjoyment out of his food and he has to work at it, which tires them out more.

My dog gets fed once a day but I am considering splitting it to twice a day.   I've seen people on here suggest putting meals in Kongs and it seems a really good idea. When I find the kong (goodness knows where it is) I am going to start feeding her breakfast in it.

thing ive noticed is that once my bully gets to a point he cant easy reach he gives up and i have to help so feeding his meals in it wouldnt work i dont think but for fun im trying

he probably gives up because he knows you will get it out for him. give him the kong later than he would usually get fed and do not get it out for him. he will soon find a technique to get it out.

if he doesn't work it out by his evening meal don't let him see you taking it out and give it to him in a bowl with the rest

Usually give mine her kong as I'm going out so I'm not there to get it out.  She has no problems anyway so going to freeze it next time (when I find it that is)

I prefer to feed twice a day, to minimise the risk of bloat/gastric torsion, and it breaks up the day, sometimes they only ever get fed whilst in training; there is no need to have a meal in a  bowl!  There are more entertaining ways of feeding an animal, something that was realised several years ago in zoos in order to provide mental stimulation for the inmates.

i use a kong activity ball to feed flo- it holds alot of kibble and keeps her interested, i feed her brekky in it and then for afternoon feed i feed her wet+dry from bowl.

I feed mine breakfast and dinner in his Kong. He had the middle sized one before and I would have to keep refilling it. He could lick most of it out but developed the knack for getting the last bit out. He picks it up and continually drops it until every last bit has fallen out. I bought him the large one today so I can fit the majority of his food into it. Its double the size of the last one so he cant pick it up so easily. He turned his nose up at first until I picked it up and dropped it and some food fell out. He quickly hoovered that up and copied me by dropping it on the floor until all the food was out. Its not meant to be easy for them so just leave him be until he figures it out. He will be much more stimulated. I bought one of the new Kongs today with the grooves in the side. I mashed some frankfurters for him and squeezed them in the grooves and it kept him occupied for ages!

lol mine drops her kong to get the food out too, its empty within minutes and if i stuff it in too tight she gives up on it. Glad you said there new one with the grooves in works, looks like shes gonna be getting another new toy!

these new kongs - do you mean the activity balls?
cos these are excellent for what you are wanting to provide for your dogs.
they are a hollow ball, with nicks and grooves around- which is good for putting logic oral gel into- to clean teeth!

I dont think so, the ones saw were red and had 4 or 6 large protuding sticky out bits with grooves in to squash food in. I think it said something about being great if thrown too because it would bounce off in any direction. Whats the make of the activity ball you have? this sounds good too, only one i have is a round ball like one with a sliding hole to put hard treats in, she isnt impressed with it lol.

oh i know what kong youre talking about! they look good too.

the one i mean is a 'kong' product- its a hexagonal ball- confused! but its great- bounces and hold lots of treats/kibble. called 'kong activity ball' ;)
