I'm assuming you've had her checked by the vet for any underlying reasons for her weight gain so assuming she has no other health problems I'm wondering whether she also gets snacks or titbits in between meals? Because no matter how good the dog's own food is, treats and nibbles can easily pile the weight on a dog. Especially a small one.

I "inherited" an overweight cocker spaniel and it was actually very difficult getting the pounds off him. The vet recommended various diet-versions of complete food but none of them really made a huge difference and ultimately it was cutting down on portion size and cutting out any extras that kept his weight reasonably under control.

Less food and treats and more excercise. :)

I can not stress enough how far away to stay from those diet foods, most of them are terrible :( It honestly astounds me how any dog could survive on those "foods"

Well to be honest, Hailey, I thought all the diet food I was pressed to try was an expensive con and decided to use commonsense principles instead. Which, as you say, basically involved less food, no treats at all and more exercise!

I think it is horses for courses, my cocker enjoys her lite diet and has done much better on it than when we simply reduced quantities which caused a severe begging and mugging crisis :)

It is really quite simple.  She has to burn more calories than she takes in.  Not at all unlike when we need to lose a little weight.  When I need to drop a few pounds (like now), I go to the gym more often and eat more sensibly.  I do not go out and buy high priced diet food and there is no need to do that for your dog.

If she is hungry, try adding some raw green beans to her kibble.  It adds a little bulk with the benefit of very few calories.

A little more fibre to fill and satisfy, the same principle as the "lite" foods available :)  The "lite" food I use is the same price as the normal.

Different breed but  I had a border collie who reacted badly to spaying. She didn't eat alot and had plentyof exercise but still put on weight dramatically.
The main thing is be totally honest with yourself with regards to treats. I did treat mine a bit but she's down to two gravy bones a day and that's it. Tried reducing didn't work, tried light didn't work. She was down to hardly anything. Now I give her a small bit of complete and make the rest up with veggies which luckily she loves. Cabbage, beans, swede, carrots, peas etc. I use some of the water to make a gravy with a teaspoon of naturediet pinched from my other dogs meal. She had put on 5 kilos in weight and since the beginning of december up until now she has lost a kilo and is happy, not trying to theive. Once a week I substitute the complete with some white fish or some lean chicken.
I know your breed is obviously a lot smaller but try her on the veg, they'll be one she needs.
Everytime I feel a bit guilty and want to give her an extra treat, I remind myself if I do this I'm killing her before her time, blunt I know but it makes me stick to it.

Hi Suki Suki

JWB is a great food with good ingredients.  However, if I had a dog with a weight-gain problem, I would probably switch it to Burns:

www.burns-pet-nutrition.co.uk

Burns is just as good a food, in terms of ingredients, as JWB is.  The only difference is that many people find that their dogs lose weight when on it, even when fed the recommended amount.  I even know of breeders who use Burns just when their bitches are recovering from having litters, to get the weight off them, and then switch them back to their usual food.  Burns makes no mentions of this aspect of their food, but I've heard the same story from enough different people to know that there must be some truth in it.
