Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Great danes and toys!!!
- By sam diss [gb] Date 17.01.06 10:33 UTC
Hi,
I am asking this question on behalf of a friend who hasn't got her PC up and running yet.She has an 18month old great dane who is Gorgeous, he is actually very big for a great dane, so you can imagine he's a big lad. Anyway the question she has is does anybody know of any types of toys that are good for the bigger dog. Every toy she has bought for him has been destroyed within a few minutes of him playing with it. She has tried all the usual kongs, but nothing lasts. He is very playful and gentle with everyone but toys just dont stand a chance.
Anyway my friend would really apppreciate any suggestions. thanks.

my friend has a dane bitch- the only toy that she has never destroyed and LOVES is a giant kong!
they dont look very entertaining but she loves it!

Arent the black kongs stronger aswell might be worth getting one of those.  I have also seen big tyre toys that are supposed to be "indestructable" never used one though cant vouch for them.

yes thats the one- giant black kong- she loves it!

Aaahhh, but the toys they have they can't destroy are the ones they lose interest in :D

Willis most favourite toy is a ball and a game of fetch. He also likes ragga rope toys and furry ducks that quack - he tends not to destroy them - but Phoebe takes em off him and rips them apart so they have to be kept in Willis's special cupboard :D

there's a toy out there somewhere called the "tuffie" toy - that's supposed to be indestructible, it's a sort of soft toy I think.  All the reviews of it I've read have been very positive - most from dobe owners with "stuffie killers", like my own :D - I don't have a link though, but I'm sure it'll come up on google or Yahoo if you search for Tuffie toy or something like that.

I have the same prob with my Dane, his only just turned 9 months, but will destroy anything! So i found in pets at home this Bone chew, cant quite remember who its made by but its basically indistructable, its almost like a big rock! Dont throw the thing whatever you do, its also aimed at large/very strong chewers! Ive had this for about a month now and although its marked from chewing, its not had chunks bitten off and eaten! And he loves it, when it gets a bit too manky and dirty though il definately buy him another! No complaints from me appart from when it gets dropped on your foot! Ouch! :D

I think theres only really kongs and nyla bones (whatever they are called?) that are indestructable, anything soft toy wise, thin rubber balls/squeakies or rope toys get ruined in minutes here.

I have one of the massive tyre rings from pets at home but its erm..... slightly heavy to be dragging to the beach to play fetch :D :D :D

I only have the younger one that will play so i usually just raid the charity shops for teddies as he likes to carry them around in his mouth for a few days before murdering them

LOL :D Phoebe does that aswell - loves it up, then rips its insides out and swallows the squeak :D
- By mygirl [gb] Date 17.01.06 19:57 UTC
:D :D :D I can't understand how they can carry it around curl up with it and love it only to kill it 3days later!!

I suspect they are tenderising it :D
- By mygirl [gb] Date 17.01.06 20:24 UTC
They are lulling that teddy into a false sense of security (Oh my lets not think toy story here) there will be hundreds of terrified teddies in charity shops pleading everytime i walk in saying "Noooo not me don't pick me"

:D :D :D :D :D

- By mygirl [gb] Date 17.01.06 20:25 UTC
Tesco do one too Mel a nyla bone for about £3 i think.
- By Blues mum Date 17.01.06 20:27 UTC
oohh, tell you what i do get from tesco`s, scooby snacks! lol :D

Please be very careful with Nylabones, they are not indestructible to a big dog that loves to chew.
Our kai chewed the end off of one and tried to swallow it,thankfully i managed to retrieve the piece before he succeded. I wont have them in the house now.

Same here.. We bought the largest one possible thinking it would last a while.. 4 days later it was destroyed!! :(

The only toys we have found that have now lasted for ages are the Vanilla rings you can buy. they are not unchewable & have had some hammer, but they haven't broken, snapped or anything & the dogs both love playing with them :)

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I will print this off and pass to my friend. I haven't heard of vanilla rings any idea where you can get hold of them. thanks again.
