Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Stud book number
- By bertbeagle [gb] Date 16.01.06 15:17 UTC
Hi,

How does a dog get or achieve a stud book number? Someone was talking about a dog getting one over the weekend and I just wondered how a dog got one?

Also with a Junior Warrant exactly how many 1st does a dog have to get at Championship and Open Shows etc? Does there have to be 3 or more in both Open and Championship Show classes?

Many thanks :)

Generally a stud book number is gained by a First, Second or Third in Limit or Open, a C.C. or Reserve C.C. win depending on what breed you have and what band that breed falls into. You also can get it by gaining your Junior Warrant.

To get points for your junior warrant, you need 25 points. A minimum of 3 points have to be won at a champ show and a minimum of 3 at open shows.
You are correct that you need 3 dogs in the class to get a point for that class. However if you stood alone in your class then went bob. As long as there were three dogs present you get a point for bob.
Look on the kennel club website under awards. It gives you the requirements in full along with the form to download.

From the KC website
A Junior Warrant will be issued on receipt of an application from the registered owner at the time of
qualification, in respect of a dog that has obtained 25 points between the ages of 6 and 18 months.
A minimum of three points must be won at Championship Shows where Challenge Certificates for the
breed are on offer and a minimum of 3 points won at Open Shows or Championship Shows where
Challenge Certificates are not offered for the breed. The scale of points is as follows

1 Three points for each First Prize awarded in a Breed Class at a Championship Show where
Challenge Certificates were on offer for the breed.

2 One point for each First Prize awarded in a Breed Class at a Championship Show where Challenge
Certificates were not offered for the breed, or at an Open Show.

3 One point for the award of Best of Breed at an Open Show. Only to be claimed if no Junior Warrant
Points were gained by that dog by winning a Breed Class or Classes.

4 Junior Warrant points cannot be claimed from classes or for awards with less than three dogs of the
breed present. In assessing the number of dogs present in each class, exhibitors may count a dog as
having been present in a class provided it was entered in that class and was present in its first class
for the breed at that Show.

5 Junior Warrant holders will be awarded a Stud Book Number.

6 The title "JW" may be used after the name of the dog on Show entries and in catalogues.

Would just add that different breeds come under different "bands" for stud book numbers - some breeds may only be eligible by winning 1st place in Open at champ shows(apart from the other details mentioned by megan57collies :) )  I keep losing track because the KC changed our breed last year and then changed it back again   I think it's currently 1st in Limit and then 1,2,3, in Open but really should check it out LOL  :D

regards Teri

Yes Beagles are currently in band D so it is 1st 2nd 3rd in open and 1st in limit aswell as CC RCC and JW thats without going into the working awards that would also qualify.
- By spanishwaterdog [gb] Date 16.01.06 16:03 UTC
I remember getting one for my dog years ago that got a couple of firsts at a champ. show, but I don't ever remember getting one for my boy that had a couple of Res. CC's.  Unfortunately he died just before new year so I'm not chasing it up but honestly can't ever remember it.
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 16.01.06 16:13 UTC
Well I honestly don't know why that would be, maybe an oversight  or heaven forbid lost in the post, as it definitely does qualify all bands. When it was brought in though I can't say?

Thankyou everyone! :)

Excellent, that explains everything I need to know, it must be quite hard to get a Junior Warrant as you only have a short period of time to do it.

Cheers

Hi Bertbeagle,

Im trying for my JW with Alfie at the moment, we have until April 12th and are currently on 17 points   Most of his points have come from champ shows, the problem we have at open shows is not enough in the class, he has stood alone in so many classes and the annoying thing is he has won 4th in the puppy group a couple of times (which is excellent for an slow maturing breed) so you would have thought that would mean something :(

Fingers crossed though, I have entered everything on :D :D

Also, when you win a first place make sure you not how many were absent from the class as you have to put this info on the form I believe.

Good luck, how old is your dog ?

Thanks Claire,

Well done with your points I do hope Alfie gets his JW, please keep us posted. Goodluck!

My girl is just a wee baby almost 4 months and sooo beautiful. I am very much a novice when it comes to showing I have only been to a few Champ and Open show and loads of Companion Shows.

I plan to do as many shows as I can would love her to get a Junior Warrant but I'm not sure if that will happen no harm in trying though. I have looked at the past years results and have found at alot of the mixed breed Open Shows there are often only 1 or 2 in the classes. So I'll enter as many Champ Shows as I can and see how we go. I'll keep you all posted of our progress!

It is often worth entering more than oen class, as a higher class may have more dogs in, and often a  cracking puppy will look better than a gawky junior and beat them.

I never won a single point in puppy classes, even though she did very well as a puppy getting BP and even a champ show puppy group place and won one of the pupy stakes overall.

Even though she won most of ehr classes, if I hadn't entered more than one class whe ould nver have got her JW, but fortunately in the end we had several points to spare.  Her Champion mother never got ehrs, as at that tiem you had to win 10 points at open shows, and she only won 6 classes with sufficient dogs in at this level, though she had over 30 points overall, but not enough from Open shows.

Ok, so when I enter her in Minor Puppy should I also enter her in Puppy or Junior aswell?

What happens if she got say 2nd in Minor Puppy and then got 1st in Junior? Would she still be able to enter Best Puppy in Breed?

Thanks

H
- By Brainless [gb] Date 17.01.06 13:38 UTC
No, but then she wouldn't have won best puppy anyway as she would have been beaten by another pup (if beaten in Junior but not by a pup then could still challenge for BIB).  You would still get the points from the class she won, as long as there were 3 dogs in it.
- By bertbeagle [gb] Date 17.01.06 14:25 UTC
Ofcourse, it's the unbeaten rule.

Ahhhhhhh so much to learn I think I've got alot of reading to to! :)
- By LucyD [gb] Date 17.01.06 22:31 UTC
Bert I would enter Minor puppy and Puppy, but not more than 2 classes as it's a long day for a young puppy. Then when she's older perhaps Puppy and Junior, or Puppy & Novice?
- By ClaireyS Date 17.01.06 22:32 UTC
Be warned about entering junior with a puppy, if you win junior at an open show that is one win out of Novice, three wins and you are out.  When Alf was a pup I only entered him in puppy at open shows then we could enter Novice at Champ shows and get more points for our wins.  Bit complicated but do you see what I mean ?  Also if there is only one/two entered in junior, maiden, Novice etc I wouldnt go in as that would be a win out of Novice and you wouldnt get any points for it.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 17.01.06 22:52 UTC
If you have entered though you have to go in to any breed clqass otherwise your awards in earlier classes will be disqualified.

Depends on the breed with Novice, as we rarely have this class at champ shows, and with few Open shows having puppy classes for us most pups are out of Novice before they ever leave puppy.
- By LucyD [gb] Date 17.01.06 22:30 UTC
Hi Claire, don't forget you can claim a point for BOB if there were not enough dogs in the class itself.

Still think it should count whether or not there were 3 in the class, as long as there are 3 in the challenge - then we'd have got ours, boo hoo!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 17.01.06 01:26 UTC
In my breed we get very few, some years noen at all, but certainly no more than one or two a year.

It is also useful to remember that it is not just success in the show ring that brings you a stud book number ;)

Success in Field Trials, Obedience, Agility and Working Trials (at the appropriate level) is rewarded with a KC stud book number, recognising its excellence in the chosen field of the owner............................

Many thanks for all the advice, I have a couple more questions.

Can I find all the information in the KC website in regards to the rules of showing, classes etc?

Can anybody recommend a good book with all the Rules related to showing etc?

Cheers

You can buy the complete KC rules & regs for all the KC events etc in the KC year book which is £6 from their online shop or you can buy the Breed show reg, Obedience reg, WT regs etc in individual booklets that cost £1.50 each again from thier online shop. They come under publications I think
